(Awareness Act) Tracking the true impact of influenza across the country can be incredibly difficult for a number of factors. First, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the individual states are not required to report deaths related to influenza in those Americans over the age of 18 to the CDC, limiting the availability of accurate information for the purposes of tracking trends nationally. Furthermore, many of these deaths aren’t actually recorded as with influenza as the cause of death. Instead, death certificates list a number of flu-related complications such as respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, or complications related to inflammation of the heart, brain or muscle tissues.
