(Sterling Nicole Bennett) Striving for perfection in an imperfect world isn’t an innately bad thing. We could all benefit from a little self-improvement. There is a transmutation required to obtain anything in life, including skill.

Unfortunately, beauty is pain and nothing worth having comes for free. Sometimes, making a deal with the devil is as small as losing one thing to gain another.
During a long overdue personal jam session on my old Washburn acoustic guitar that hadn’t been touched in years, I was amazed how the knowledge of the instrument had stayed with me. The skill hadn’t dissipated as much as you might expect. Time spent developing a skill isn’t lost just because you’ve moved on. After I had fully stretched my musical muscles, I realized that my rough, callused, peeling fret fingers were begging for relief.
The master musicians of our world are driven by their inner passion to grind tirelessly in order to perfect their skill, and as a result, their fingers callus over. These calluses provide a protective barrier which allows the musician to play any song without taking a break. Without these calluses, it would be impossible to play a stringed instrument.
But, calluses aren’t beautiful, are they?
Not in the traditional sense.
By allowing the calluses to form, you are losing feeling in the tips of your fingers. Never again will you feel the specific sensations that these tips send to your brain. My first thought was, “I’ll never be able to touch my future child with this hand.” The fact that this fearful thought crept into my mind at all is an example of the transmutation required for skill mastery. By sacrificing the soft, beautiful, sensitive ability to feel the tips of your fingers, you receive the ability to master the skill of playing a stringed instrument.
The more I thought about this, the more I realized that this give and take is required for anything, not just skill mastery. In order to create room for gain, you must clear a space.
You have to sacrifice in order to achieve any goal.
Creating a life inside of the womb requires a woman to sacrifice her youthful body and transform into a childbearing superwoman. She sacrifices her youthful life in a selfless act required to create a wonderful new being. What a beautiful representation of love. As the child grows, the parents are faced with the decision of sacrifice seemingly nonstop to provide the type of life they want for their children.
The exchange of pain and frustration when learning a new workout routine will transmute into a healthier body and result in feeling more comfortable in your own skin. Exercising requires a temporary sacrifice of comfort in order to receive, among many other things, increased body function, muscle growth, and blood circulation.
Receiving a new tattoo requires the sacrifice of precious skin real estate on your body. By sacrificing a section of skin, sacrificing ever seeing that blank slab of your body ever again, you are gaining a (hopefully) meaningful art piece that will follow you throughout your life journey. You are receiving something beautiful in exchange for something equally or more beautiful.
Finally, deciding to go on a diet requires you to sacrifice your comfort in order to allow your body the space needed to clean out the old junk you’ve ever so excitedly dumped into it during one of your famous late night binges. In this case, you are not only sacrificing comfort, but also the emotional satisfaction associated with digging the Oreos out of that tub of cookies and cream ice-cream. Granted, immediately after you may be met with an intense depression and self-loathing effect, which likely prompted the diet to begin with. By sacrificing the temporary comfort presented by junk food, and by embracing the emotions that go along with this act, you are allowing room for healing to take place within your body, soul, and mind.
Conclusion
Sometimes, looking at things from a different point of view can help you understand a situation. Transmuting pain into a lifelong skill, hobby, or career is a wonderful way to stop the cycle of self-sabotage. Understanding that everything in life has to have balance could help explain why bad things happen during good times. It may seem like many things are out of our control, but learning which actions are possible for us to take may teach us how to regain the control we had previously surrendered. You can’t control everything in life, but you can learn to control your reactions. You get to choose your goals, and what goals are worth sacrificing for.
