    In Hawaii, the officials accepted $16 million dollar for a plan to release millions of lab-mosquitoes every week for 20 years, all in the name of ‘helping the birds.’ (though the indigenous bird population in Hawaii are actually doing quite well, according to bird watchers and photographers.)

    The environmental assessment for biopesticide mosquito releases on Kaua’i has been published, and the deadline to comment in opposition to the project is July 24, 2023. This plan to conduct corporate experiments on our islands is rushing forward without the consent of the public and with no regard for the serious risks to our endangered native birds, fragile ecosystems, and public health. While our case in environmental court continues to move forward, the agencies involved in this dangerous plan are already releasing infected mosquitoes in East Maui. We’ve filed a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to stop this, and a hearing is scheduled for next month.

    In the below article, he Dept. of the Interior document referenced in the article indicates bigger picture plans to implement genetic modification of mosquitoes, gene drives, synthetic biology, and more.
    It event hints at genetic modification of the birds, which has been a focus of researchers tied to this project.
