Beginning Your Meditation Practice

Wednesday, September 5, 2018 By Stillness in the Storm Leave a Comment

Spread the love

(Abby Cahoone) We live in a very fast-paced society, we are constantly looking to move to the next thing and it is very common to have a “go-go-go” mentality. In giving yourself the space to be separate from the hustle and bustle of the crazy world we live in and taking the time to sit and be with yourself you grant yourself a feeling of personal power, control, and freedom. When you practice meditation daily it can feel like coming home to yourself by reconnecting to your own truths and energy over and over again.

Why is Establishing Your Own Practice Important?

When you take the time to meditate on a consistent basis is going to make the benefits of meditation much more apparent in your life. Your mental capacity to endure stress, to move through contrasting experiences, and to live a more mindful life will increase. By slowing your mind down intentionally every single day you are training yourself to be more thoughtful. You will find that when you go through a bout of anger you can more easily calm yourself down as you utilize the tools you have been training yourself to use in your daily meditation. Creative energy will also be able to flow more freely through you as you will find yourself in what is commonly known as a “flow state” far more often as you take the time to slow the mind down from the thoughts that rush around it every day.

When you meditate you are removing the mental blocks that you have been putting up as you either focus on something positive, on your breathing, or whatever you choose to focus on in meditation. This helps positive insight and inspiration to flow easily through your mind and body (hence: the flow state) and after having experienced this state of being after a few times you will probably become hooked on it!

Make it a Habit.

The best way to get the full effects and benefits of meditation is to make it a habit. We live our life based on habits; we wake up at the same time, go to the same job, we may even eat the same thing for dinner every day. More importantly we, out of habit, think the same thoughts about the same things every day for the most part. This does shape our perception of the world and thereby creates what we end up experiencing. Studies show that about 40 percent of people’s daily activities are performed each day in almost the same situations. Why not make meditation part of this 40 percent? The benefits of it are more than convincing to make this mindful practice a useful pattern.

Repetition is key to making your practice a new habit- which is why you want to dedicate the time to meditate every single day.  It can take anywhere from 21 days to 200+ days to form a new habit, it is going to depend on your own mindset about it and what you feel you get out of the new pattern you are forming. My advice; stick to it, it may feel like a chore at first. Some days may be hard to sit and be mindful but there are so many different forms of meditation you can do that after taking the time to meditate daily and seeing the results in your life, the habit will be formed in no time!

Time to Dive into Your Mind.

It is time to sit with yourself and soak in all of the mindful benefits of meditation.

This week you will:

  • Dictate a time to meditate every day.
  • Intend what you will get out of your current practice.
  • Practice meditation daily and record your experience.

Step 1: Decide the Time of Day you will Meditate.

The time in which you meditate every day will help you make the most out of your practice. You may like to meditate in the morning before you begin the day, or maybe meditating after the hustle and bustle of the day before bed is more your style. Set a time of day you will meditate every day for the next few weeks. Remember repetition is key, so stick to that time of day for meditating every single day if you can.

Step 2: Set your Intention for your Meditation Practice.

Now that you are getting ready to dive into actually meditating every day it is best to revisit your intention for meditation to remind yourself what you will be working towards for your practice. This could be calming down, this could be manifesting and attracting something specific, or it could be in harnessing a deeper connection to yourself. Decide now what you will get out of your meditation practice and write it in your journal at the beginning of each practice. This will make you want to meditate daily because it will feel like you are working towards something. The extra incentive is always a good way to motivate yourself!

Step 3: Meditate Daily in your Sacred Space at your Determined Time.

You now have more than enough information about yourself and this new habit you are working on establishing to start meditating. Every day in your Sacred Space, filled with the fantastic energy you have put into it, meditate at the time you have set aside. Use the form of meditation you found best worked for you and your intention last week. Record every day what sensations you feel, messages you may receive, images that you saw, etc. You will be able to revisit what you record at any time and you may notice your own ability to calm yourself gets stronger, you may realize you get precognitive insights during your meditation and you sense things before they happen as you connect to the energy of the Universe that connects us all, or you may notice other patterns!

Step 4. Analysis.

After the first week has passed, answer these questions about your meditation practice:

  1. What have I learned about myself while meditating for the past week?
  2. Have I made progress working towards my intention during the past week?
  3. Do I feel a stronger connection to myself and Source, the Universe, God (whatever you resonate with calling it) now that I have been meditating?
  4. Is there anything else I can do to get more out of my practice? (Ex. adding music, trying guided meditations, etc.)

Continued Education.

If you have never meditated before it can be really difficult to meditate all by yourself, here are some links to guided meditations on YouTube you can check out.

There is also a multitude of apps you can download on your phone to aid in meditation, my personal favorite is called Insight Timer. It has thousands of free guided meditations along with an option to just listen to meditative music with a timer. It is worth checking out whether you are a novice or more experienced meditator!

My Personal Tips for Meditating.

  • Meditate daily, it’s one of the healthiest habits to start.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t get any insight during meditation. Sometimes clearing your mind is better than getting any messages from your higher self or source.
  • Guided meditations can be your best friend. Especially if you are feeling particularly scattered.
  • There is no wrong way to meditate. Don’t think because one person practices one way means that is the only way you can get results out of a meditation practice.
  • Change up the kinds of meditations you do. This can help you connect to different aspects of yourself and Source in different ways.

What is our mission? Why do we post what we do?

Our mission here is to curate (share) articles and information that we feel is important for the evolution of consciousness. Most of that information is written or produced by other people and organizations, which means it does not represent our views or opinions as managing staff of Stillness in the Storm. Some of the content is written by one of our writers and is clearly marked accordingly. Just because we share a CNN story that speaks badly about the President doesn’t mean we’re promoting anti-POTUS views. We’re reporting on the fact as it was reported, and that this event is important for us to know so we can better contend with the challenges of gaining freedom and prosperity. Similarly, just because we share a pro/anti-[insert issue or topic] content, such as a pro-second amendment piece or an anti-military video doesn’t mean we endorse what is said. Again, information is shared on this site for the purpose of evolving consciousness. In our opinion, consciousness evolves through the process of accumulating knowledge of the truth and contemplating that knowledge to distill wisdom and improve life by discovering and incorporating holistic values. Thus, sharing information from many different sources, with many different perspectives is the best way to maximize evolution. What’s more, the mastery of mind and discernment doesn’t occur in a vacuum, it is much like the immune system, it needs regular exposure to new things to stay healthy and strong. If you have any questions as to our mission or methods please reach out to us at [email protected].
