(Jonathan Davis) High-end grocery chain Whole Foods was ratioed online after a social media user posted a photo of a “woke” banner at one of its locations some saw as empty pandering to the black community.

A banner placed below the chain’s logo read, “Racism has no place here. We support the black community.”
But not long after someone posted a photo of the banner, social media users responded to what they saw as empty rhetoric.
“This sh*t is deranged,” said one Twitter user.

“In 2020 a group of Whole Foods employees wore shirts with the phrase ‘racism has no place here’ and were told to change their shirts or go home. Fast forward to today Whole Foods, a grocery store that (to my knowledge) has no stores in predominantly Black spaces has this up,” another user noted in an apparent reference to hypocrisy in a post that contained the photo with the banner and one of a t-shirt.

In July 2020, The New York Times reported that employees at several Whole Foods locations were punished for wearing “Black Lives Matter” t-shirts:
From colorful patterns and vegetable prints to SpongeBob SquarePants, creative masks have been embraced by Whole Foods employees across the country since the pandemic began.
But according to 14 employees at Whole Foods stores in California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Washington State, the company drew the line at Black Lives Matter masks, apparel and pins. The workers were sent home without pay, subjected to “corrective” discipline and threatened with the loss of their jobs for refusing to remove the items, a class-action lawsuit filed on Monday in Federal District Court in Massachusetts said.
The company, which is owned by Amazon, did not enforce its dress code policy when employees wore messages on masks and apparel expressing support for other entities and causes, such as sports teams and L.G.B.T.Q. rights, the lawsuit said.
One employee, Savannah Kinzer, was fired from her job in Cambridge, Mass., last year for wearing a Black Lives Matter mask and for demonstrating against the chain’s “discipline of employees” for wearing them in the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, which touched off protests and riots nationwide and led to a resurgence of the BLM movement.
“Whole Foods employees across the country have been prohibited from wearing Black Lives Matter masks and other related apparel at work,” said the lawsuit.
In August of last year, workers at a Whole Foods in Portland, Ore. — which became ground zero for BLM and Antifa protests following Floyd’s murder — walked off the job in unison to protest in support of an employee who was forced to resign for refusing to take off a button that said “racism has no place here.”
Fox Business Network reported:
Dylan Woodruff, 23, said he was told on July 27 not to come back to work because of the button, Street Roots reported. Woodruff worked at Whole Foods’ Laurelhurst store east of downtown Portland and was expected at Sunday’s walkout, a spokesperson for Portland Jobs with Justice, a group supporting the walkout, told FOX Business.
Whole Foods’ website declares “Racism has no place here,” but the button was not made by Whole Foods. The store’s policy bans “any visible slogans, messages, logos or advertising that are not company-related, on any article of clothing.”
“Firing a worker for wearing [Whole Foods’] own slogan is just another indignity on top of the unfair conditions private sector retail workers have been speaking out about for months,” a spokesperson for Portland Jobs with Justice told FOX Business.
A spokesperson for Whole Foods pushed back on the allegation the employee was let go because of the mask.
“It is simply untrue that she was separated from the company for wearing a Black Lives Matter face mask,” the spokesperson told the business news network. “As an employer we must uphold our policies in an equitable and consistent manner. Savannah had full understanding of our policies and was given a number of opportunities to comply.”
