WATCH: “The Reality of Truth” Documentary – Musings on the Nature of Truth and Reality (video)

(Kaia Roman) As a seeker of truth, I was drawn in by the title of the film “The Reality of Truth”. What is the reality of truth, anyway? What feels real and true for me isn’t necessarily the same for someone else. That element of the human experience — the fact that we each interpret life through the filter of our own unique mind — has always fascinated me.

When I decided to watch this film (which you can watch in full, below) I was full of questions. Is there a way to transcend the mind and access a higher truth, free from our biased filter? This experience has been sought by sages, religious practitioners, spiritual seekers, and even scientists, for centuries. Could that truth be more easily accessible with the aid of sacred plants? And what significance could this film’s message have for me, personally? What new discoveries lie in the unexplored areas of my own consciousness? How can I take my personal development to the next level of depth and healing, and help others do the same?

While I didn’t find all the answers, I did find the film’s message inspiring. I’m sharing this review in hopes that other truth seekers will find it helpful.

The Reality of Truth: Review

In The Reality of Truth, a group of seekers (which happen to have several attractive celebrities among them) go searching for answers to these universal questions. The film was created and directed by Mike “Zappy” Zapolin, an internet pioneer who had every outward measure of success — abundant wealth, prosperous career, beautiful home and family — but felt hollow and purposeless inside. In his quest for relief and inspiration, Zappy tapped into his network of wise colleagues for guidance.

It helps to have friends in high places. Watching Zappy’s interviews are like viewing a “Who’s Who” of the world’s top spiritual thought leaders, including Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Sri Sri Ravi Shanka, and Ram Das. Based on their advice to seek answers in the spiritual realm and plant medicine, Zappy gathers a group of friends — including famous actress Michelle Rodriguez — to embark on an international journey exploring spiritual practices, and specifically spiritual practices involving hallucinogenic plants, around the world. Viewers get to witness the group’s transformation as they visit some of the most spiritual places on Earth — including Rome, Peru, Costa Rica, Maui, and the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.

Of course, Zappy and his friends aren’t the first people to seek spiritual gateways through plant medicine. Throughout history, humans have explored techniques to break free from mental or physical reality, including prayer, chanting, meditation, and breathwork practices. Shamans have been using plants to induce healing for thousands of years. Today, many of these plants which are considered sacred in much of the world — although illegal in the US — are becoming accessible to people in the Western world for the first time through spiritual travel experiences.

People often experience profound mystical experiences with the aid of these jungle plants, frequently leading to new understandings of themselves and the world, emotional and physical healing, and even freedom from addiction or other destructive patterns. But are these experiences “real” or “true”? The Reality of Truth asks us to question our own perceptions of reality and truth. Perhaps certain plants can allow us access to parts of our consciousness, or a collective consciousness, which are otherwise unreachable. Perhaps the truth we experience every day is really the illusion, while a deeper truth lives within us, waiting to be discovered. Could it be that these powerful plant medicines have been intentionally barred from the mainstream in order to support the pharmaceutical industry? Zappy invites viewers to ponder these questions, and explore the answers for ourselves.

The relationship between reality, spirituality, religion, and plant medicine remains mysterious. But there is no denying the benefits purported by the majority of people who try certain hallucinogenic plants, including Zappy and his crew. Story after story in this film describe a breakthrough in understanding and freedom from suffering following the use of plant medicine.

For example, at the beginning of the film, entrepreneur Gerard Powell lends Zappy his fancy home to conduct the interview with Deepak Chopra. After hearing Chopra’s advice, Powell used plant medicine for the first time and healed himself of decades-long addiction. By the end of the film, we see that Gerard’s profound healing inspired him to start Rythmia Life Advancement Center in Costa Rica, the first medically-licensed plant medicine resort in the world — inspired by a vision he received while using plant medicine.

This film may challenge your pre-conceived notions about hallucinogens and other ancient healing techniques. But it may also open your eyes to a version of truth and reality that you’ve never considered.
