(Beth Baumann) Climate change activist Greta Thunberg on Monday announced her foundation will donate $120,000 U.S. dollars to the WHO Foundation’s COVAX program, which provides COVID vaccines to lower-income countries. The goal is to address the “vaccine nationalism” crisis Thunberg says is on the same playing field as the “climate crisis.”

“About 1 in 4 people in high-income countries have received a COVID-19 vaccine, compared with just 1 in more than 500 in low-income countries,” Thunberg wrote in the announcement post on Twitter. “My foundation will donate €100000 to support COVAX to ensure a more equitable global COVID-19 vaccine distribution. #VaccineEquity.”

According to Thunberg, the COVID vaccine distribution disparities have to do with various nations’ incomes.
She hit back at higher-income nations, like the United States, for moving to vaccinate young and healthy people before shipping vaccines to lower-income countries that are struggling.
“It is completely unethical that high-income countries are now vaccinating young and healthy people if that happens at the expense of people in risk groups and on the front lines in low and middle-income countries. And this is a moral test,” Thunberg explained. “We talked today about showing solidarity and yet vaccine nationalism is what’s running the vaccine distribution.”
Thunberg said how the vaccine rollout is taking place has to do with individuals’ “mindsets.”
“What these crises come down to is that we only think for ourselves. We don’t think about others,” she said, according to NPR. “They come down to the way we treat others, the way we treat other human beings, the way we treat other animals and nature itself. So we need to change our mindsets.”

Thunberg’s comments come as President Joe Biden announced on Monday that all Americans ages 16 and older are now eligible for the COVID vaccine.
“So, here’s my direct plea to everyone listening: If you haven’t already made an appointment to get vaccinated, make one right now. You are eligible,” the president said during a press conference on Monday. “Then, reach out to your family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they can make an appointment too. And see what help you can offer them to help those who might need extra assistance.”
Up until now, vaccine distribution was broken up for health care workers, other frontline workers, and those ages 65 and up.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 129 million – or 50.4% – of Americans have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. More than 82 million Americans 18 and older are fully vaccinated, The Hill reported.
