Part 1 of an Original Stillness in the Storm Series on the Power of Thoughts and Words
Even scientists of today are discovering that the way we focus our thinking has an effect on our experience in the world. It is interesting to note that the main commodity of negative press and mind control is the power of thoughts and words, but used negatively. As we realize various agendas of mind control and negative manipulation of thought, it becomes even more clear that our job is to stand strong with spirit, and to focalize the powerful gifts of our thoughts and words towards positive outcomes and uplifting aims.
In the bible, we are taught that we ought to steer our thinking in the direction of goodness, kindness and compassion. This would result in our own lives being blessed as well as blessing others.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
~ Philippians 4:8
The bible admonishes us to consider how our thoughts and actions can affect not only ourselves but others. How many times have hateful words and unkind expressions broken relationships and even families? Since many families unfortunately did not have the knowledge or practice of kindness, compassion and consideration of others feelings, humanity has learned bad habits that keep causing unwanted and undesired results.
We can leverage these uplifting teachings to remind ourselves to steer our lives in the right direction rather than getting tangled up in unnecessary drama.
Let the Spirit change your way of thinking.
~ Ephesians 4:23My son, pay attention to my words. Open your ears to what I say. Do not lose sight of these things. Keep them deep within your heart because they are life to those who find them and they heal the whole body. Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it. Remove dishonesty from your mouth. Put deceptive speech far away from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead and your sight be focused in front of you.
~ Proverbs 4:20-25And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
~ Romans 12:2
When we remember that our words have power and impact, and choose them carefully and wisely, we can become uplifters rather than tools of negativity. This will affect our own lives and the lives of those around us.
The power of the tongue is life and death—those who love to talk will eat what it produces.
~ Proverbs 18:21A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
~ Proverbs 17:22A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance, but sorrow of the heart crushes the spirit.
~ Proverbs 15:13Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
~ Proverbs 16:24Anxiety weighs down the heart of a man, but a good word cheers it up.
~ Proverbs 12:25A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches. The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
~ Proverbs 11:16-17Being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time.
~ Proverbs 17:22A happy heart enlightens the face, but a sad heart reflects a broken spirit. A discerning mind seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on stupidity. The entire life of the afflicted seems disastrous, but a good heart feasts continuously.
~ Proverbs 15:13-15
When we have been battered by our own words or the hurtful words of others, we can rest upon the Lord.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
~ Matthew 11:28-30Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage.
~ John 14:27
The mechanism for achieving this peace includes the power of prayer.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
~ Colossians 4:2
When we are most hurting, this is the time to choose another way and become generous of spirit.
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
~ Proverbs 11:25
The trials of the world include trials on the national and global stage, trials in our communities and families, and trials within our own minds. These trials give us opportunities to learn the ways of thinking, feeling and perceiving the world that the powerful wisdom in the bible is suggesting are for our highest good. While this may at times feel challenging, we have all the support in the world — and beyond — to accomplish this. Let us never give up on ourselves as we strive to grow in our ability to communicate in ways that uplift and inspire rather than tearing down others or ourselves.
Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
~ James 1:2-4
