Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday filed cloture to end debate and the senate voted Thursday evening.
60 votes were needed to end debate and advance the $480 billion debt limit hike.

The Senate voted 61-38 to advance the debt limit increase bill.

The Senate has narrowly voted, 61-38, to bypass a GOP filibuster of the short-term debt limit bill, with 11 Republicans joining all 50 Dems to pass the 60-vote threshold needed to proceed to a final vote.

Update: The US Senate held a final vote on raising the debt limit after voting to end debate.
A simple majority was required.
The Senate voted 50-48 to raise the debt limit by $480 billion.
The bill now heads to the House of Representatives.
