Lying on the ground in the middle of the busy street off Times Square was a man’s body. It looked like he’d been shot at least three times.
There was no doubt he was quite dead.
Hovering around were men and women bedecked in jackets that stated flatly on the back: U.S. Marshals.
The dead guy was a killer from Texas who had murdered his family.
He refused to surrender, pulled a .45-calibre handgun and paid for his foolishness with his life.
That was my introduction to the U.S. Marshals Service, the oldest branch of law enforcement in the United States. It is also among the most fabled.
Part of the marshals’ remit is to catch bad guys and they have a lot of leeway to do it.
More recently, the service have taken on the task of rescuing children who have fallen into the clutches of sex traffickers.
On Monday, it was announced that the marshals — working in conjunction with local cops in northeastern Ohio — had rescued 35 missing and endangered children between the ages of 13 and 18.
About 10 of them were in the vile clutches of sex traffickers who pimped out their young bodies across the northern end of the state. A number were located in Miami.
In August, the marshals rescued 39 missing and endangered children in Georgia in an project called Operation Not Forgotten.
Nine accused criminals were also busted. Charges included sex trafficking, parental kidnapping, registered sex offender violations, drugs and weapons possession, and custodial interference.
“When we track down fugitives, it’s a good feeling to know that we’re putting the bad guy behind bars. But that sense of accomplishment is nothing compared to finding a missing child,” Darby Kirby, chief of the missing child unit, said in a statement.
In Canada, there is no such concerted effort. Instead, mostly young women are shuffled from one loveless hotel room to the next along the 401 and beyond.
Ashley Tingley of the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking agrees that a dedicated agency is a good idea.
“With law enforcement, often the left hand doesn’t talk to the right hand,” she told the Toronto Sun.
“Human traffickers are great at exploiting that communications gap.”
More recently, the OPP has established a 20-agency task force that combines resources to tackle the problem.
“It’s a crime that is hidden in plain sight,” Tingley said.
Perhaps it’s time this country established an agency similar to the marshals, a national agency charged with tracking down bad guys, scofflaws and missing vulnerable children.
After all, this is the second-largest country in the world and victims often fall between the cracks of a plethora of law enforcement agencies and bureaucracy.
These kids are strangled by red tape.
You ask yourself: How many children have fallen into the clutches of brutal sex traffickers who are violent parasites sucking the blood from their young souls?
The Mounties are pulled in a thousand different directions. How are the hundreds of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls working for you?
It’s probably long overdue for a Canadian version of the U.S. Marshals.
Mind you, the double killer taken off the board on a warm September day two decades ago may disagree.
