(Jonathan Davis) In a further sign that Democrats are losing faith in keeping the House during next year’s midterm elections, two more long-serving members of the party are throwing in the towel and calling it quits.

“Reps. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) and David Price (D-N.C.) will not seek reelection, they will announce later Monday,” Politico reported earlier in the day.
“Doyle, 68, was first elected in 1994 and is a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The 81-year-old Price, who won his seat in 1996, is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee,” the outlet continued, adding:
Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth of Kentucky, the chair of the House Budget Committee, announced Tuesday that he will forgo any re-election effort.
Yarmuth, first elected in 2007 and the only Democrat in Kentucky’s congressional delegation, has been a central player in helping to craft President Joe Biden’s multitrillion-dollar budget bill. His retirement comes just over a year before the 2022 midterms, a potentially difficult cycle for Democrats who seek to defend their slim House majority.
“It’s been an incredible journey since my first campaign in 2006 until now,” Yarmuth said. “I will continue to fight for Louisville in Washington for another 15 months, and then, I will retire from Congress.”
Within minutes of the announcement, Democratic state Sen. Morgan McGarvey of Kentucky announced he will run for Yarmuth’s seat in what is, for the moment, a heavily Democratic district in Louisville. But after the GOP-controlled state legislature finishes redistricting following the 2020 census, that could change, the report noted.
Democratic Rep. Cheri Bustos of Illinois, former chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in April that she, too, would shun a re-election bid.
Republicans may sense that overtaking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s historically narrow majority is well within reach now. And they may ride former President Donald Trump’s popularity to achieve it.
Former President Donald Trump met with Republican leaders in Bedminster, N.J. on Thursday to plot the party’s path forward in the hopes of retaking control of at least the House during next year’s midterms.
“We talked for most of the time about the work that the Republican Study Committee is doing to define the agenda for the future course of the Republican Party, which is fighting for the Trump agenda,” Banks told the New York Post.
“We talked about our election integrity bill, The Save Democracy Act, which he was very supportive of and we talked about what we’ve done to define immigration moving forward,” Banks noted further.
“We spent nearly two hours with the President with President Trump who’s in great spirits,” Banks said, adding that the focus was on renewing and reviving the former president’s policy agenda.
“We believe we take back the majority by focusing on the Trump agenda, and President Trump plays a big role in that,” Banks continued. “He’s obviously planning to go out and hit the road and campaign for candidates who share our vision, and we were excited to talk to him about that.”
“I can say that members of our group are very encouraging and if not encouraging him to run in 2024, encouraging him to continue to communicate with American people and engage with the American people,” the Indiana Republican said.
