Amidst this current turmoil of a health pandemic, we certainly need a real celestial spectacle to get our mood and energies up and running. In a few weeks’ time, we will see a really rare occurrence of planets aligning in the night sky. In conjecture with the moon’s phase, the positioning will look like a smiling face looking down on us! This is certainly a great bringer of smiles and positivity, and no we are not even talking astrology here!
Just the sheer sight of the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter aligning perfectly to form a happy smile in the skies is something to look forward to. This is quite a rare celestial phenomenon and has in fact taken place quite a few times in recent history. Yet, that being said, it isn’t always easy to spot it when it does, thus making the direct observation of such an event quite a rare sight on its own.
The scientific term for this occurrence is called an occultation, and it happens when a crescent Moon is positioned directly between Venus and the Earth, ABS-CBN News reports. Due to the precise and intricate placement of the two planets, people in certain parts of the world will be able to see a happy smiley face, whereas people in other parts will see the same thing, but upside down.
As the outlet goes on to explain, it is said to happen due to the moon’s orbit around the Earth, and the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Depending on what latitude you view this occurrence from, you will see the moon in the shape of a ‘U’ (lit on the bottom) rather than a backward ‘C’ (lit on the side). So the place where you are watching has everything to do with whether you will catch a glimpse or not. But regardless of that, the explanation is pretty much the same either way.

In recent times, this sublime cosmic event has taken place in the skies over Asia back in 2008. It was again visible from Australia and the far south, as well as North America in 2012. Taking more detail into the complexity of sightings, these events are visible only in the evening sky for a short period after sunset. There will come a time when each part of the world can pay homage to this amazing event. Even in cities that are said to be hampered by severe light pollution, like NYC or Hong Kong, you can somehow see this rare occurrence if you’re on time.

Taking a closer look at the image of it happening the last time around, you can see the smiley face bright and as clear as it can be. This is another great example of the phenomenon known a “pareidolia“, which means to see meaningful images on otherwise random data or scenery. It can be seeing faces or shapes in the clouds, in ripples on a lake or… a smiley face in the night sky. It is a rather common phenomenon, especially in relation to astronomy.

Venus, Jupiter, and the Moon are the 3 brightest celestial objects in our skies, and they are going to give us a very special show soon. You can witness a ‘smiley face moon conjunction’ that will occur over North America, May 16, 2020. Larry Sessions of EarthSky.org, a forum, and blogging community for scientists and science enthusiasts, said it is “not unusual for the moon to appear to pass close to Venus” since this happens about once a month. However, the occurrence seen on May 16 (Sunday) is said to be rare because these events “are only visible in the evening sky half the time and then only for a short period after sunset.” The apparent closeness varies from month to month as well,” Sessions stated.

I am not sure which planet Larry is on, but predictions do not match. The moon will pass close to Saturn and Jupiter on May 12, but it will be in a gibbous phase.
