High school student Devonte Mumphrey, a sophomore at Alto High School who played football, basketball, and track, died during a home basketball game against Mount Enterprise. According to reports, Mumphrey collapsed in the second quarter of the game.
The cause of Mumphrey’s death is still unknown.
Alto ISD superintendent released a statement following his death:
Alto ISD experienced the tragic loss of a student-athlete during tonight’s home basketball game. Out of respect for the family and in light of student privacy obligations, the district cannot provide details at this time. During the coming days and weeks, we will provide our students, staff and community the support needed to process this tragedy. Grief counselors and local pastors will be on-site in the cafeteria starting at 7:15 a.m. tomorrow morning, Wednesday, Feb. 9. All of Alto ISD sends its deepest condolences to the student’s family. Please keep our community in your prayers.
On the same night, Cameran Wheatley, a 17-year-old senior at Bremen High School, died after collapsing during a basketball game at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.
According to a report from FOX 2, Chicago Fire said it took five minutes for EMS to respond and perform resuscitation on the young man before transporting him to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Wheatley’s father told ABC Chicago that his son played sports for nearly 10 years and was in good health.
There’s still no information on the cause of his death.
