(Ocean Robbins) Malted Milk, a powder consisting of dried malted barley, wheat flour, and evaporated whole milk powder, was invented in the 1870s by James Horlick, a London chemist who immigrated to Racine, Wisconsin, in search of opportunity. He saw the product as a nutritional supplement for babies, but it soon became a popular beverage for children and adults as well. More flavorful than plain milk, it was also marketed as a tonic — drinking it purportedly would not only help you sleep at night but would confer strength and vitality as well.
