Are they beginning to open your mind to the possibility – even the likelihood – that God or the Universe may have been trying to communicate with you all along. Perhaps you just haven’t been paying attention! That was certainly my experience as I opened after my near-death experience to a larger understanding of the possibilities that are trying to get our attention. In my experience and my research, I came in contact with several kinds of Energy that the yin/yang symbol demonstrates. Everything completes everything else.

The more I have investigated Energy the more I realize that many synchronicities are driven by the experiencer’s needs. If courage is needed to face the real truth as it is being shown to us – then coincidences are there. On the other hand, whenever we are in conflict or difficult decisions, we need to open ourselves in meditation, prayer, and contemplation. Then all of a sudden we have choices.

The synchronicities in my life became so obvious that when I wrote them all down and they became my first book Full Circle, The Near-Death Experience and Beyond, (1990 Simon and Schuster) even though the linking coincidences didn’t make “sense” to my mind.  Synchronicities are interpreted, accepted, and celebrated by our hearts. Our head wants to reject them because the odds of it happening are huge and there is no logical explanation.  With courage, we face whatever is being shown or transmitted for us and we can begin (and be delighted) to watch the healing occur.

Over the years my friend and colleague Robert Perry, author of Signs: A New Approach to Coincidence, Synchronicity, Guidance, Life Purpose and God’s Plan have shared our love for being on the Hero’s Journey, our love of observation and that comes together in the projects we share.

I wrote the Foreword to Robert’s book, I also participated as a subject in a pilot study Robert headed up and I was one of the authors for the study we published in a scholarly Psychiatry Journal (CMPE Journal Paper).  Robert writes of the study after he did an interview for Skeptiko:

“My friend Barbara Whitfield wrote to me about it. I had referred to her in the interview as the woman who got almost a third of the CMPEs*  we recorded in the pilot study. Quite remarkably, out of 16 CMPEs (Conjunctions of Meaningful Powerful Events)  recorded by 17 participants, 5 of those were Barbara’s.”

I told Robert that during the excitement of creating the study, I had prayed for help as a subject to help us prove that these CMPEs do exist. And I truly believed in my heart and still do that a higher Intelligence is talking to us, teaching us if we are able to listen. In fact, I and many near-death experiencers (NDErs) believe that the same Intelligence that was with us in our NDEs is still with us in the shape of synchronicities and in prayer. In prayer, we are talking to this Intelligent Energy Force and in synchronicities we are listening. We are also giving direction in prayer for this Energy Force to answer. Here’s a wonderful example. 

*(Robert calls these extreme synchronicities Conjunctions of Meaningfully Parallel/Powerful Events or CMPEs)

Larry King was our Matchmaker

Charlie and I met for the first time in 1985 at a conference at Georgetown University in Washington DC. We were appealing to congress for funding to study the continuation of consciousness after death. The list of speakers read like a Who’s Who in consciousness research.

 

During a Q and A, I talked for a few minutes about the parallels between Ken Ring’s and Stan Groff’s work.  Charles Whitfield walked up to me after and introduced himself. I still remember where I was standing when this happened and how Dr. Whitfield’s energy felt. After that, we corresponded a couple times a year between Baltimore where he lived and The University of Connecticut where I worked. He would ask me research questions and I would send him copies of papers that I thought were relevant, with a handwritten cover letter.  (He saved all the papers I sent him and the cover letters. He also had a black and white picture of me that he had gotten a few years earlier from a conference brochure. He had it upright on a bookshelf in a room where he could see my photo every day. He told me later several times he did that to use it as a way of intention to find me in a real relationship.)

When my first book came out I was invited back to be on Larry King Live again. The week after I appeared on Larry, I was seeing a patient every evening who was having Chemotherapy for Cancer.  Every evening I did energy work on her and it decreased her nausea.

The Friday evening before I appeared on Larry King Live, I lit my Sabbath candles as I always did. As I said the same prayer that millions of Jews were saying all over the world, I looked between the two flames and realized that this was a direct line to God. My two college sons were not home that evening and I didn’t censor my thoughts into words like I may have if they were standing with me. I definitely felt a Presence around me as I heard myself say out loud, “Dear God, I’m ready. Please send me someone who is as smart as I am and Kind.” I took another deep breath and blurted out, “Please send me someone I deserve.”

Little did I know that the same week, Charlie was out in California and had prayed with a friend for a “Healthy long term relationship”.)

I was on Larry King Monday evening after doing an interview on the radio with Don Imus, who by the way, was gentle and kind with me. And Imus read my poem The Beginning to me on the air.

Sometime during that show, Charles Whitfield came home his office and flipped on the TV. There I was in living color. And next to his TV was that picture of me.

I came home on Tuesday.  Wednesday when Charlie called me, I had to catch my breath because he was coming to Farmington Connecticut (one town from where I was living) the next weekend to speak at an International ACA  (Adult Children Anonymous) conference.  He would be speaking Friday evening and he invited me to the talk and then dinner after. As I started to breathe again, I asked God in my heart if this was happening?  So fast?

I had to tell Charlie that I couldn’t Friday evening because I was doing energy work with a cancer patient. Could we meet on Saturday for lunch?

Friday morning my cancer patient called to say her chemo was canceled for that day. I tried to contact Charlie but he was in transit to Connecticut.

So I just showed up at the conference and found a seat with 800 more people as the conference began. Charlie was introduced an hour later and I sat in awe of this man who could non-stop talk for an hour and a half about feelings and with slides!!

Then there was a long line of people holding one of Charlie’s books to get an autograph. My mind was still spinning about this series of synchronicities: 1) praying because I thought I was ready for a relationship, 2) Charlie seeing me on TV and actually coming up to where I lived the next weekend, 3) my patient’s chemo being canceled. And I didn’t even know his side yet – but it is replete with synchronicities too.

As he finished signing books, I moved in between everyone, took his hand and guided him out of the bantering crowd. As soon as my hand took his, I knew. There was a zap of Energy like no other I had felt in all my time doing energy work.

I knew this man was going to change my life. And here’s the most amazing part for me:

Bruce Greyson, Ken Ring and I were on to some new data that was connecting childhood trauma and neglect to Near-Death experiencers. And it was in a positive way for us. I wanted to get going on this whole new connection. When I opened up Charlie”s Healing the Child Within the evening before we were together (he had sent me this book and I hadn’t even looked at it until I knew I was going to have dinner with him.) Everything I wanted to look at with Bruce and Ken for clinical application, Charlie had already written about. The synchronicities between my research and Charlie’s became my second book Spiritual Awakenings: Insights of the NDE and other doorways to our Soul.

If you start to notice these meaningful coincidences in your life, treat them with respect and use your heart, not your head to listen closely to them. I write the deep ones down and over time reflect on them. I have learned over the years that when I pray, I need to be specific – and when the coincidences happen, I need to listen carefully.
