A Lending Tree report mentioned how 2/3rd of respondents had not changed their charitable habits from previous years. 34% of the population has donated more than once in the last year. Other forms of charity have also increased this year. Donations to local relief funds have increased by 13% while money sent to loved ones who have lost their jobs increased by 12%.
Americans have donated more to charities despite the pandemic, with 56% of them making recurring donations to their charities. 30% of Americans continue to pay for services like babysitting and housekeeping even when they are not availing of the services. Caring Americans did not forget about such people when they were unable to provide work like before. They continued with the payments.
AMERICANS HAVE DONATED MORE TO CHARITIES: A SHINING EXAMPLE OF HUMANITY
The first stimulus package, the CARES Act, encouraged Americans to donate more by allowing them to write off spending of more than $3000 from their income tax calculations without itemizing the deductions.
Not just personal charity, corporate charity work has also increased in 2020. Fidelity Charitable, the largest organizer of DAFs, reported in June that they raised $3.4 billion from such funds. This was a 28% jump from the donations made in the first 6 months of 2019. Combined, the increase was of a whopping 667% for food banks and other food assistance programs.
Schwab Charitable record a 46% growth in DAF grants too. The total amount came to $1.7 billion from 330,000 grants until June. This was the highest amount of donations made in the history of the Charity, which is among the largest philanthropic funds of the country.
According to a Washington Examiner report, DAFs from 32 community foundations across 21 states “reported an 80 percent increase in donations… from March to May, compared with the same period last year.”
Despite the gloom and doom brought by this disease, Americans have donated more to charities this year. This is a shining example of the spirit of humanity, even in the middle of a terrible pandemic.
