The senator was spotted at the “We Love NYC” concert dancing with “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert behind the scenes as the Afghanistan evacuation was still underway and what was Hurricane, now Tropical Storm, Henri approached New York.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s press secretary Bill Neidhardt shared the video in a tweet he titled “backstage antics.”

“10,000 plus Americans are stranded in Afghanistan, surrounded by the enemy & desperate for help & this is what Senate Majority Leader @chuckschumer is doing. Dancing in the street with celebrities. Just so tone deaf & embarrassing for our nation,” veteran and author Sean Parnell said in a tweet.

“Colbert will go right back to bashing DeSantis Monday after spending the weekend dancing with a Senator who is clearly torn up about the debacle in Afghanistan,” another Twitter user said.

“Chuck Schumer dances while Afghanistan falls apart, a hurricane threatens his city, and Joe Biden ravages our economy. Good to know what Dems priorities are…” Ryan Fournier said.

“This is what the Democrats did at the weekend as brave soldiers tried to rescue THEIR mess,” another said.

“If Chuck Schumer wants to spend a joyous night rocking out in Central Park while Kabul is a mess and Biden is up to his neck in hot water, then he should get a job besides Majority Leader,” professor Tom Nichols said.

“I had no compunction about pointing out that Gov. Noem parading through a superspreader event during a national crisis was a symbol of an unserious nation. What Chuck Schumer did today was worse. He’s the Senate Majority Leader. An even greater symbol of utter unseriousness.

“We’re facing a rising threat of extremism at home and a foreign policy bungle overseas. And a man whose job (and age, for heaven’s sake) should demand more propriety in any case is dancing around in Central Park,” he said.

“Schumer and Colbert celebrate American citizens being held hostage in Afghanistan. Only in Joe Biden’s America….” Amy Kremer said.

“Really torn up about the Americans left in Afghanistan,” another Twitter user said.

The concert was a star studded event but not every performer was able to perform as the approaching tropical storm caused the concert to be stopped, The New York Times reported.

It was supposed to be a glorious celebration of the re-emergence of New York City after more than a year of pandemic hardship — a concert bringing thousands of vaccinated fans on Saturday evening to the Great Lawn of Central Park to hear an all-star lineup.

And for the first couple of hours it was, with messages of New York’s resilience sandwiched between performances by the New York Philharmonic, Jennifer Hudson, Carlos Santana, LL Cool J, and Earth, Wind and Fire, among others.

But shortly after 7:30 p.m., as Barry Manilow was performing “Can’t Smile Without You,” lightning brought the concert to a halt. “Please seek shelter for your safety,” an announcer intoned, stopping the music, as people began filing out of the park.

The crowds were sent home, and the concert was brought to an abrupt halt. Even with Hurricane Henri expected to make landfall in the region Sunday, officials held out the hope of resuming the performance if the weather allowed, and CNN, which had been broadcasting the concert, vamped for time. Many of the headliners, including Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello and Maluma, had yet to perform when it was cut short. But shortly before 10:30 p.m., the show was called off for good.
