On Tuesday, reports surfaced that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had privately told members of her party that she was forming a select committee to probe the Jan. 6 incident at the U.S. Capitol.
Later on Tuesday, Pelosi addressed reporters and said that was not a true report.
“No, I did not make that announcement,” Pelosi said. “Somebody put out a false report.”
Politico reported:
Pelosi’s office clarified Tuesday night that she had not formally announced plans to form that committee, capping an hour of confusion after reports surfaced that she had done so at a closed-door meeting earlier that night.
In that discussion, Pelosi seemed to suggest that she would move forward with creating the committee, according to a source in the room.
The caucus has been debating for weeks whether to launch a separate probe when several House committees, including the Homeland Security Committee, are already leading their own investigations into the violent riot.
In late May, the U.S. Senate failed to reach the 60 votes necessary to advance a bill creating a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 mayhem.
In a vote of 54 – 35, the measure was the first legislative filibuster of the Biden presidency.
Six Republicans broke ranks to join every Democrat in favor.
The six Republicans who voted in favor of the commission were Sens. Bill Cassidy (La.), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mitt Romney (Utah), and Ben Sasse (Neb.).

“The Department of Justice is deep into a massive criminal investigation,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said.
“I do not believe the additional, extraneous ‘commission’ that Democratic leaders want would uncover crucial new facts or promote healing. Frankly, I do not believe it is even designed to,” McConnell added.
Murkowski blasted McConnell on Friday for refusing to back the commission, accusing the leader of her party of putting “short-term political gain” over finding out the truth about the deadly insurrection.
Cassidy said in a statement after voting in favor of advancing the bill: “The investigations will happen with or without Republicans. To ensure the investigations are fair, impartial, and focused on the facts, Republicans need to be involved.”
Last week, Fox News host Tucker Carlson made some serious accusations about the FBI.
During an explosive segment Tuesday night on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” he accused FBI operatives of “taking part” in organizing the Jan. 6 mayhem.
Texas GOP Rep. Louis Gohmert picked up on Carlson’s comments and demanded answers about this.
During a fiery speech on the House floor, Gohmert questioned reports about whether the FBI may have infiltrated protesters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
“But this is scary stuff. This is — this is kind of third-world stuff. This is not only third-world stuff, but this is like Putin kind of activity,” Gohmert said.
“So, if there were federal agents that were involved on January 6, we really need to know what the FBI knew and when they knew it, and not only that, we need to know how much participation did any of our federal friends,” he added.
“Either at DOJ, FBI, or any of the intel community, what kind of role were they playing, because there’s information that came out about the effort to kidnap the Michigan governor and there were federal agents — so it’s been said, there were federal agents that were involved in that,” Gohmert concluded.
