In part 2 of The Neurogenesis Regimen article series, we will discuss three more supplements, two more foods and another exercise to help support optimal brain function, memory and nervous system health.
Supplements
Bacopa monnieri, also known as Brahmi, is an Ayurvedic herb used to help support numerous aspects of brain and memory health. Bacopa has been shown to be a neuroprotectant and an up-regulator of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). It has also been shown to significantly improve memory acquisition and retention, because it is known to suppress Acetylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme that breaks down Acetylcholine. Thus, because it preserves this vital neurotransmitter, attention to and acquisition of new information is improved.
Throughout the Indian culture, it is quite common for students to consume Bacopa to enhance their learning skills, attention and concentration while in school.
In Ayurveda, Bacopa is said to help elevate one’s consciousness and to profoundly help with meditation and concentration.
I like the Himalaya brand for this specific product, as they are an Ayurvedic company and it contains both the whole herb and a standardized extract of the herb.

Another Ayurvedic herb known as Gotu Kola has long been used to help support healthy brain function, memory, focus and clarity for thousands of years. One study has shown how Gotu Kola helps to increase the protein expression of BDNF, while also exhibiting antioxidant effects. Another study showed how Gotu Kola helped to accelerate nerve regeneration.
Gotu Kola is another herb in Ayurveda also known as Brahmi. In other words, both Bacopa and Gotu Kola are considered by some to be named Brahmi and have similar spiritual benefits.

The third supplement we’ll discuss is another Ayurvedic substance known as Haritaki. Haritaki has been shown to help maintain levels of two different Superoxide Dismutases (which are some of the most potent intra-cellular antioxidants and are fundamental to cellular health and cellular longevity) in an experimentally-induced ischemic neuronal damage study. It also helped to maintain levels of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor).
Another study compared twenty different Ayurvedic herbs commonly used for brain support and found that Haritaki showed the greatest anti-oxidant capacity among those tested.

Foods
Turmeric is a traditional Ayurvedic spice that contains many nutritive compounds. The most studied and well-known compound is curcumin, which has been shown to enhance adult hippocampal neurogenesis by increasing newly generated cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Another study showed how curcumin helped to up-regulate BDNF and serotonin receptor 1-A, which helped to reverse stress-induced hippocampal damage.

While turmeric has many other compounds in it that are beneficial to human health, there is only a very small amount of curcumin in it. So, if someone is wanting to experience the neurogenic benefits of curcumin, it can be considered to take it as a supplement. Another food to support brain health is algae oil. Algae oil contains the important omega-3 fatty acids known as DHA and EPA, which have been shown to up-regulate adult neurogenesis.
Exercise
If a person types in “meditation” on PubMed.gov, nearly 6,000 search results are located. While not all of these are individual studies, it is clear that meditation has a robust amount of research behind it showing how beneficial it is for a person’s health. It doesn’t come as any surprise then that meditation has been shown to increase the gray matter size in the hippocampus. One of the proposed mechanisms is that stress reductions leads to higher preservation of neurotrophins like NGF and BDNF.
