Newton-John and her husband John Easterling grow the versatile plant at their California home where medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal under state law. Newton-John’s cannabis treatment has made a notable difference as the actress and singer battles cancer for the second time. She told 60 Minutes Australia:
“I really believe the cannabis has made a huge difference. If I don’t take the drops I can feel the pain, so I know it’s working.”
Newton-John contracted breast cancer and was diagnosed in 1992. She beat the cancer then and recovered. But in 2013 the cancer reappeared. In 2017, doctors told Newton-John that the cancer had spread to her bones and would eventually kill her.

Easterling convinced his wife to try cannabis to alleviate her pain. He said:
“I was highly confident up front, but deep inside I was a bit nervous.”
Newton-John is supporting her health with a combination of conventional and alternative medicines and remedies. Easterling says he’s confident medicinal cannabis is contributing significantly to maintaining her health. He spent years cultivating herbs fro the Amazon, and holds a strong belief in the medicinal power of plants. He told 60 Minutes:
“Cannabis can be used for so many things. I don’t use the word cure…. but I’m confident. We had MRIs showing a lesser number of tumours, and the majority of the other ones are shrinking. Her mobility is increasing, her energy levels are increasing. I can’t say it’s all cannabis, because we do have a variety of Amazonian botanicals too. Then she’s doing an estrogen blocker and another drug that facilitates that estrogen block.”
Newton-John is hoping to break down the stigma surrounding cannabis use. She told 60 Minutes:
“It’s not a drug, it’s a herb and a plant. I think when people use the word drug, it’s a misconception as to what it is and it gets people thinking, ‘oh it’s just another drug’, but it’s not.”

Later this year, doctors at the Olivia Newton-John Research Institute will conduct a clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of medicinal cannabis. Professor Jonathan Cebon, head oncologist, says he and his team want to examine the benefits of medicinal cannabis in the lab. He told 60 Minutes:
“There’s absolutely no doubt that a lot of patients with cancer use medicinal marijuana and report great benefits from it. So you have to believe what the patients tell you. We’re very happy to be able to do a clinical trial with medicinal cannabis to assess its effects on the quality of life with patients and cancer.”
Newton-John is selling many of her possessions and accumulated props and movie items. She is planning to donate much of the money from the sales to cancer research facilities in Australia.
