Oh, and they did it all with over a week to spare before the deadline, which is equally impressive.
According to Breitbart, now that the appropriate number of signatures have been collected, it means that a recall vote is in the cards, meaning that Newsom’s days as the California governor could be numbered.
“That is more than enough to be able to have this initiative qualified for a special election later this year to let the people finally decide … what is gonna happen with the fate and the future of California Gov. Gavin Newsom,” said Randy Economy, who works as a political adviser on the recall effort.
Before the recall vote is added to the ballot, the required 1,500,000 signatures will all have to be validated, which will certainly be another massive undertaking. Leaders of the recall movement vowed early on to get as many signatures over the required amount as possible in order to make sure that the inevitable invalidations will be far outnumbered by valid signatures.
The Sacramento Bee provided a quick rundown of the situation:
County and state elections officials still need to verify that nearly 1.5 million are valid signatures from registered California voters before the recall can qualify for the ballot. But recall supporters said Sunday that they’re confident they’ve collected enough.
The most recent signature verification numbers from the Secretary of State’s Office found that about 83% of the signatures counted by early February were valid. There’s no guarantee that validity rate will hold for the remaining signatures, but if it does, proponents would reach the threshold needed to trigger a special recall election.
Should the required number of signatures be validated, which is widely expected to happen, the recall vote on the ballot will feature two primary questions: The first one will be a question as to whether or not the governor should, in fact, be recalled. Secondly, the ballot will ask voters who they believe should replace him, if so.
As Breitbart noted, it’s entirely possible for a replacement candidate to win the recall election even if they don’t receive a majority of the vote, which is what happened when former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced Gray Davis.
As crappy as 2021 has been, overall, in the coming months, Americans could see the recall of Gavin Newsom and, if we’re lucky, the resignation of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
I don’t know about you, but those two being removed from office would, for me, make this one of the best years ever.
