The alleged shooter’s brother, 34-year-old Ali Aliwi Alissa, told media outlets on Tuesday that he believes mental illness played the largest role in the shooting spree, downplaying accusations that given his brothers’ past social media posts in which he very clearly was not a supporter of former President Trump that the motive was politically based.
“[It was] not at all a political statement. It’s mental illness,” the older brother told the Daily Beast. “The guy used to get bullied a lot in high school. He was like an outgoing kid, but after he went to high school and got bullied a lot, he started becoming anti-social.” He added that his younger brother also developed serious paranoia issues.
“When he was having lunch with my sister in a restaurant, he said, ‘People are in the parking lot. They are looking for me.’ She went out, and there was no one. We didn’t know what was going on in his head,” the older brother said, recounting times during high school in which Alissa would claim that people were chasing or watching him.
As a former wrestler, some of Alissa’s former teammates reported that he apparently wasn’t a fan of losing, saying that he would lash out after taking a loss.
“His senior year, during the wrestle-offs to see who makes varsity, he actually lost his match and quit the team and yelled out in the wrestling room that he was like going to kill everybody,” former classmate Dayton Marvel said. “Nobody believed him. We were just all kind of freaked out by it, but nobody did anything about it.”
Alissa was also involved in fights, including one where he reportedly kept punching a student even though he was already on the ground, telling police that he did it because the student apparently bullied him over his race.
The alleged shooter’s criminal record has been described as “minor,” with nothing more serious than a misdemeanor assault charge, as far as records indicate at this point in time.
He was also reportedly extremely sensitive about his race, as Marvel explained.
“He would talk about him being Muslim and how if anybody tried anything, he would file a hate crime and say they were making it up,” Marvel said. “It was a crazy deal. I just know he was a pretty cool kid until something made him mad, and then whatever made him mad, he went over the edge — way too far.”
While it sounds like Alissa was likely the victim of bullying, to some degree, coupled with potential mental illness and a short temper, it still doesn’t justify walking into a grocery store and ending the lives of 10 innocent people who were just out buying groceries for their families that day.
Undoubtedly, much more will be revealed about the shooter in the coming days and weeks, but if and when he’s convicted, hopefully, the judge throws the book at him.
