U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) wants NATO to declare war on Russia if the Kremlin deploys chemical weapons. “I think that we in the West, the United States and NATO — we need to stop telling the Russians what we won’t do,” Cheney told Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press. “We need to be very clear that we are considering all options, that the use of chemical weapons is certainly something that would alter our calculations.”

Cheney went on to speculate that Russia’s military was weak, and that the Kremlin was failing to achieve its goals. “[The Russian military] is probably not as capable as Putin thought it was,” Cheney said. “And they need to understand that if the brutality here increases, the United States will contemplate and consider every possible range of actions along with our NATO allies,” she added.

Though Liz Cheney has called for an escalation against Russia, she has stopped short of some of her colleagues in calling for a no-fly-zone, which amounts to a euphemism for war with Russia as such an action would require NATO forces to shoot down Russian aircraft. Cheney’s fellow January 6 committee member, U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, has been one of the house’s loudest proponents of war with Russia. On Saturday, he compared Russia’s use of thermobaric missiles with the deployment of chemical weapons and has repeatedly called for a no-fly-zone.

Others, namely Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), have called on the Biden Administration to supply the Ukrainian government with MIG fighter jets. “They want MIGs, send them MIGs,” Romney has said repeatedly. The White House has said they do not plan on issuing fighter jets to the Ukrainian government, fearing that such a move would lead to escalation.
