Protesters close Hawera court

Judge Allan Roberts was to hear several cases as part of a standard police list day but supporters of Kiri Campbell, 32, who was appearing on five charges of using a document for pecuniary advantage, forced him to remain in his chambers.
The public gallery was packed with people, some even having to sit on the floor, and one protester was waving a United Confederation of Tribes flag, often associated with Maori sovereignty.
Through police, Judge Roberts requested the flag be removed, but the man waving it refused, instead talking about appointing peace officers and that he did not consent to what police said.
“You’re Maori, you should understand,” the man said to one of the officers.
Another, older man told police they had no legal right to detain Campbell and demanded her release. Others shouted “we come in peace” in English and Te Reo.
Campbell could then be heard in the cells screaming, prompting supporters to call out to her and renew demands for her release. She was taken from the cells, placed in a police car and taken away, the passenger door remaining open as the car drove off toward the Hawera Police Station.

The public gallery was then cleared and hearings resumed at 11am with the gallery closed.
A kaumatua spoke to the assembled crowd and suggested they hold an impromptu hui on the court grounds, rather than returning to their marae.
“We are on our own whenua. It belongs to us.
“Many people have come from all over the country to be here for Kiri, and we will all take the chance to korero,” he said.
One of her supporters said Campbell was arrested as she was a “sovereign of the land”.
“As sovereign the government’s policies and laws do not apply to her.
“She has been held under duress since Friday and now she’s been kidnapped by police because she was due to appear in court. We have come to collect her, but she is being kept under distress,” said the man, who did not give his name and said that was his right.
Police later spoke to the protesters and they left the grounds by 11am. No arrests were made.
Campbell was charged with defrauding TSB Bank of $15 million. No other details were available at court. A spokesperson for the bank said he could not provide any comment as the case was before the courts.
Campbell’s Facebook page includes several posts about the “fake laws and rule of corporations” in New Zealand and has statements putting Prime Minister John Key and Justice Minister Judith Collins “on notice” for enforcing them against her. On the page, she also said a streetlight outage in Hawera on July 21 was a “fear-mongering tactic”.
Police said Campbell appeared in court later in the day and would reappear in the next week. However, a police spokesperson could not confirm the date at press time.
