(
) White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki finally discussed the rumors that there was a feud going on between her and Biden Communications Director Kate Bedingfield.Related White House’s Psaki: Trump Didn’t Do ‘Anything Constructive Really’ to Bring about Middle East Peace
by
, May 22nd, 2021Psaki and Beddingfield spoke about the rumored tensions this week when they spoke to reporters at a Ford plant on Tuesday, Politico reported in its Playbook ahead of a profile on the reported tension.
“We were just talking about how we hate each other,” Psaki said jokingly as Bedingfield stood next to her ahead of Joe Biden’s speech at a Detroit Frod plant. They knew that Politico’s West Wing Playbook had been working on a profile of their alleged tension.
Psaki jokingly said that she and Bedingfield “fist fight on the plane” and that there is “boiling drama.”
Bedingfield added in a quip “boiling drama all the time.”
While the duo say they are drama-free, White House press and communications teams often have tension. The overlapping responsibilities and high-stress nature of the gigs can prompt turf wars and finger pointing.
There’s no outward sign of that. But there are some quiet divisions within the Biden comms team. They break down, roughly, between so-called “Bedingfield people” — mostly those who staffed Biden’s 2020 primary — and “Psaki people” — a camp of those who weren’t particularly close to Bedingfield during the campaign and/or served with the current press secretary during the Obama era.
Psaki also faces the extra challenge of not having worked on Biden’s campaign, the first time that’s been true of a new president’s press secretary since 1989, when GEORGE H.W. BUSH kept on RONALD REAGAN’s press secretary, MARLIN FITZWATER.
While there have been tensions inside the White House comms team — including some early behind-the-scenes jockeying to succeed Psaki — the divides haven’t descended into serious sniping. And aides credit that, in part, to Bedingfield and Psaki’s professional and personal relationship. “I think she was a validator for me within the Biden family,” Psaki said in an interview. “I could never be a person who had the same war wounds from the campaign. I didn’t, right … I could have been treated differently, and I would have understood it. I was ready for that. And that’s a reflection largely on her to set the tone with the team of people who worked for her on the campaign.”
But it would not be stunning to learn that Psaki has tensions with someone, as he showed her snippy side in April with a reporter.
Psaki was “curt” with another reporter last month when asked about Joe Biden’s hypocrisy as he planned to spend Easter with his family as so many Americans prepared to spend the holidays social distanced, Mediaite reported.

“Thanks, Jen. I have a couple quick questions. I wanted to ask about the President’s Easter plans because he said on his phone call with faith and family community leaders that he would probably get together with family for Easter because they’ve all been vaccinated.
“So what kind of message is that sending if he’s asking Americans not to have small gatherings until the Fourth of July, but he’s saying he’ll be with family for Easter? So can you clarify how big ‘family’?” the reporter said.
“Well, I don’t have a specific number of family members, but I can assure you that the President is — strives to be a role model in every aspect of how he’s living in this difficult time we’re all going through,” Psaki hit back.
“He obviously has a wife he’s been married to for some time. He has a couple of grandkids who he sees when he goes to Delaware. But it’s a limited group, and certainly not the big Irish Biden clan that many of you have seen throughout the course of his time in public office,” she said.
“So all his immediate family have been vaccinated?” the reporter asked, and was met with the familiar “do you have another question” response from Psaki.
“I don’t have any more updates on his immediate family. Did you have another question?” Psaki said.
But it is far from the first time Psaki has been rude to a reporter.
During a press conference in March at the White House, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy cornered Psaki over migrant detention centers being open at full capacity while schools are closed amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The incident began after Doocy hammered Psaki over the ongoing border crisis, asking the press secretary if Joe Biden has a “messaging problem.”
“We’re working to fix the mess of the last couple of years. It’s going to take some time,” Psaki said.
“This is clearly a priority for the president. We are looking at a range of options, which include the opening of additional facilities. It includes steps we can take to expedite the processing. It includes application and implementation of CDC guidelines that just came that allow for more children to be housed safely in those communities,” she added.
