(Stillness in the Storm Editor) Is it possible to manufacture memories or distort existing ones so that they no longer reflect reality? The criminal psychologist, Julia Shaw, says yes; and it is a lot easier than one might think. She also says false memories can be implanted with such ease that criminal investigators might do so without realizing it. This implies that any type of memory recall work could produce the same distorting effect unless a careful, non-suggestive process is used.
Within certain fields of research, especially whistleblower testimony, memories are often the only thing available to lend credence to a claim. But if memories can be so easily implanted or distorted, how much of what has emerged in the fields of Ufology, for example, can be accepted as fact?
This is one point that truth-seekers should take seriously. And while we need not dismiss information purely because of the potential for distortion or fabrication, we cannot reject the possibility either. A healthy amount of doubt is always advisable.
From a psychological point of view, an imagined or fabricated memory and a real one are essentially equivalent except that one is based on real events. The more time that passes and the frequency with which a memory is recalled increases the likelihood that distortions can take place, especially if there are underlying traumas that mask historical events. Emotional residue also seems to be a factor, according to research. The biases of the conscious mind in its desire to recall memory in a favorable fashion influences what is recollected. The conscious mind tends to remember things the way it wants—but not in all cases.
However, there is a way to bypass the conscious mind’s tendency to distort memory.
Regression therapies employ different hypnotic techniques wherein a subject is placed in a trance and a therapist extracts memories, which in some cases, the conscious mind never had access to. It is well established that the subconscious and unconscious mind has the capacity to store an enormous amount of data, whereas the conscious mind tends to remember things through the lens of personal desires, whims, and emotional states. Incredible details about an event can be precisely recalled using these techniques, but it is also quite easy to manipulate memories if not carefully done.
One particular field of research that is gaining popularity in the alternative media are MILABs or Military Abductions. Victims are taken by secret programs, used for a ranging number of purposes and then their memories are wiped and often replaced with what are called screen-memories—false memories specifically designed to prevent recall of what really took place.
All of this suggests that for those investigating the claims of insiders, abductee’s, extraterrestrial contactees and so on, the recognition that memory distortion can occur should not be overlooked. Since memory distortion or fabrication like what is described below occurs at a subconscious level, normal means of lie detection cannot be used to detect if a witnesses testimony is invalid.
Within fields of research that rely chiefly on anecdotal evidence there tends to exist divergences of testimony collected from witnesses, which could be explained by memory distortion or false memory implantation. This reality would not invalidate claims, merely broaden the scope of investigation and would ideally incorporate hypnotic methods performed by skilled practitioners.

“I think that reality is purely your perception”
