Hundreds of thousands remain without power in the region as officials and residents continue to inspect the damage inflicted by the storm, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane overnight Wednesday.

Newly-released before and after satellite images are capturing the extent of the damage Laura has inflicted on in the Louisiana city of Lake Charles. The images show numerous structures were flattened at the Lake Charles Regional Airport, with debris strewn across the property. Other images show damage to a neighborhood and homes near a local high school.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is vowing that his state’s “strength will show through, as it always does” following the destruction left by Laura. He wrote in a tweet this morning that “the last couple of days have been hard, and the road to recovery won’t be easy. “But we will recover,” he insisted.

Tropical Depression Laura is weakening as it moves through the Mid-Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley and into the Ohio Valley on Friday. On Saturday, what’s left of the system will move into the Mid-Atlantic. Heavy rain, strong winds and the risk of isolated severe storms will continue along its path until it exits the East Coast on Sunday.
