Humic acid is a substance that is extracted from nutrient rich soil that has profound health benefits, including reports of it being able to heal the gut, studies showing that it can stop virus replication as well as it being able to aid significantly with detoxification. As I’ve written in a recent article about fulvic acid (a substance that is found within humic), humic and fulvic acids are created by soil-based microorganisms and is the end-product of decomposed organic matter. You can think of it as the prime fertilizer for the garden. These substances are also prime “fertilizer for the body,” as we’ll describe below.
1. Gut Health
Humic acid acts as a pre-biotic, even though it is not really a fiber in and of itself. This means that it helps to boost the good bacteria within our gut. Interestingly, the humic helps the body replenish a person’s native bacteria that is unique and specific for each individual. Rather than adding in some of the more common probiotics known through a supplement (which can still be beneficial), using humic acid helps the native, person-specific bacteria flourish.
One study has shown how humic acids dramatically help boost the microbiome within the colon as well. Another study has shown how using a combination of humic acid and probiotics helped patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome by significantly reducing general feelings of illness/nausea, reducing indigestion and colitis, as compared to placebo.
In an animal study, humic acid has a positive impact on intestinal lining, which suggests it may be possible to help those with leaky gut and diverticulitis.

2. Stops Virus Replication
Several different studies show how humic acid can induce “viral fusion inhibition.” This means that it can inhibit the spreading of certain viruses.
So far, humic acid shows that it has the ability to inhibit Coxsackie A9 virus, influenza A virus and herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). It also inhibits human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and type 2 (HIV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and vaccinia virus.
The research article has made a few important points to consider as well.
“Humic Acid is first a preventative, because it interferes with a virus’ ability to attach to a host cell, penetrate the host cell, and reproduce itself. Scientific studies have demonstrated that if a host cell is penetrated before the introduction of the Humic Acid, the viral reproductive process within the host cell is not halted.
However, if one has latently infected cells (i.e. those with chronic viral infections) and Humic Acid is present, once the host cell releases the new viruses into the bloodstream the Humic Acid helps prevent the new generation(s) of viruses from attaching to the cell wall, hijacking the DNA or RNA and reproducing, effectively lowering the body’s viral load over time and hence its therapeutic function for active viral infections.
Humic Acid may work for most, if not all, viral infections. Other studies are currently on going throughout the world.”
3. Detoxification
Humic acids by themselves are powerful substances in aiding detoxification, but it is the fulvic acids within the humic that are even better at being able to detoxify.
