(Kyle Becker) On Thursday, House Democrats held a hearing on gun legislation where multiple representatives attempted to debunk the ‘good guy with a gun’ narrative.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) argued that he could not find a single incident of a shooter with a so-called “assault weapon” who was stopped by a citizen with a gun. Watch:
“I don‘t think there is a single incident — maybe there is one, but I have not found one, of an assailant using an assault weapon that was stopped by a person with a gun. So, this is a — maybe there is one of the thousands and thousands and thousands of shootings.”
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) weighed in with his own argument that the “good guy with a gun” narrative was a myth. Watch:
“What we have come to see across America is that our law enforcement are just outgunned,” he claimed. “We are a country of unrestricted weaponry that continues to put the most dangerous weapons in the hands of the most dangerous people.”
“So we can hire 100,000 retired police officers, but if we are a country that has over 100 million assault rifles, they are just outgunned,” he added. “And that is what we saw in Uvalde and, tragically, in 2016 in Dallas, Texas. Five brave police officers, S.W.A.T.-trained police officers were murdered by a killer with an assault rifle.”
But Swalwell, beyond his revisionist history about Uvalde being about 19 police officers being outgunned by a single mass shooter with two rifles, as well as Cicilline, are not just wrong about their denial that law-abiding, gun-owning citizens can stop mass shootings. They are as wrong as wrong can be.
But a gun-toting West Virginia woman put an end to a man’s attempted mass shooting at a birthday party LAST WEEK. That’s because she was carrying herself and she shot him dead.
“Dennis Butler, 37, was killed Wednesday night after he pulled out the rifle and began shooting at dozens of people attending the birthday-graduation party outside an apartment complex in the city of Charleston,” the police statement said.
“The woman, who was attending the party, drew a pistol and fired, killing Butler, the statement said,” the AP reported. “No one at the party was injured.”
Instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night,” Chief of Detectives Tony Hazelett said on Thursday. Hazelett added that no charges would be filed against the woman.
The West Virginia woman’s story proves that guns don’t just take lives, they can also save them. It just depends on who is carrying the gun.
On Friday, Steven McCraw, the Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, revealed that 19 police officers had responded to the Uvalde mass shooting crime scene, but waited over an hour for a border patrol tactical team to act.
“There was 19, like I said, there was 19 officers in there,” he said. “In fact, there was plenty of officers to do whatever needed to be done, with one exception is that the incident commander inside believed they needed more equipment and more officers to do a tactical breach at that point.”
“That’s why BORTAC was requested on the scene,” he continued. “As soon as they were there, they executed… a dynamic entry and went in. And of course, that was not until 12:57.”
“Hey, for the benefit of hindsight, where I’m sitting now, of course it was not the right decision, it was the wrong decision, period,” he added. “There’s no excuse for that. But again, I wasn’t there, but I’m just telling you from what we know, we believe there should have been an entry as soon as you can.”
“When there’s an active shooter, the rules changed,” he said. “It’s no longer a barricaded subject. If you don’t have time you don’t worry about outer perimeters. And by the way, Texas embraces active shooter training, active shooter certification, and that doctrine requires officers — we don’t care what agency you’re from, you don’t have to have a leader on the scene. Every officer lines up, stacks up, goes and finds where those rounds are being fired at and keeps shooting until the subject is dead, period.”
According to the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer, the number of gun homicides where the murder weapon was determined for ALL rifles combined was 455 — that was about a quarter of the number for “knives and cutting instruments” (1,739) and fewer than “personal weapons” like hands and feet (662).
“Assault weapons” include semi-automatic weapons like the standard AR-15, which is a subclass of all rifles in the United States. There are approximately 393 million firearms in the United States owned by roughly 150 million gun owners.
There have been approximately 13 deadly mass shootings at schools in the United States since 1966, according to The Gun Violence Archive. The majority of mass shooters who have had a psychiatric evaluation were assessed as having mental health issues.
It is telling that the Democratic Party’s reaction to extremely rare mass shootings at schools is to disarm as many law-abiding Americans as they can. It’s never to take action on the schools’ security failures or the many ‘red flags’ their communities or law enforcement miss before a mass shooter strikes.
