The Justice Department has subpoenaed material related to a book that Cuomo wrote during the pandemic as investigators continue their criminal investigation into coronavirus-related nursing home deaths in the state.
“Prosecutors working for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn asked for communications related to Mr. Cuomo’s October 2020 book, ‘American Crisis,’ including contracts and materials used to pitch the book to publishers, the people said,” The Wall Street Journal reported. “They said the subpoenas indicated prosecutors are interested in nursing-home issues in the book, which more broadly recounted the governor’s response to the pandemic.”
Back in February, federal prosecutors launched a criminal investigation into the Cuomo administration over its handling of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities during the pandemic.
The Wall Street Journal reported in March that federal prosecutors were investigating a push by the Cuomo administration during the early days of the pandemic to shield nursing homes from lawsuits and criminal prosecution.
“Nursing homes were included in a provision giving liability immunity to doctors, hospitals and their executives, as well as healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak last spring, surprising some lawmakers and healthcare officials,” the report said. “Federal prosecutors’ examination of how nursing homes came to be included in the immunity law is part of a broader probe into the Cuomo’s administration’s actions regarding nursing homes during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Last month, the federal government expanded its probe into Cuomo’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cuomo is already under investigation by both the FBI and the United States Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn over reports his office deliberately hid data on how many deaths resulted from his pandemic nursing home policy.
The feds are now looking into whether Cuomo gave his family and other Democratic allies access to hard-to-find COVID-19 tests.
This allegedly took place as nursing homes across New York begged for assistance.
Cuomo is also facing an impeachment inquiry, too, which will focus on Cuomo’s handling of COVID-19 testing.
The impeachment investigation into New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will also examine whether members of the Democratic governor’s family were given priority access to coronavirus tests in the first weeks of the pandemic last year,” according to a “key lawmaker” who spoke to the Wall Street Journal.
State Assemblyman Charles Lavine, a Democrat from Nassau County, said in an interview on Thursday that the allocation of coronavirus tests last year ‘will certainly receive some attention” in the inquiry he oversees as head of the chamber’s Judiciary Committee.’
A spokesman for the governor told Fox News that Cuomo went “‘above and beyond’ to get people tested in the early days of the pandemic to identify cases and prevent the spread of the virus. ‘Among those we assisted were members of the general public, including legislators, reporters, state workers, and their families.’”
