s New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo faces allegations of sexual harassment, his office now says that it has asked the Empire State’s attorney general and the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals to choose a lawyer to conduct an investigation into the allegations.

“We had selected former Federal Judge Barbara Jones, with a stellar record for qualifications and integrity, but we want to avoid even the perception of a lack of independence or inference of politics,” Special Counsel and Senior Advisor to the Governor Beth Garvey said in a statement.

“Accordingly we have asked the Attorney General of New York State and the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals to jointly select an independent and qualified lawyer in private practice without political affiliation to conduct a thorough review of the matter and issue a public report. The work product will be solely controlled by that independent lawyer personally selected by the Attorney General and Chief Judge,” the statement noted.

Rocked by a second aide’s allegations, embattled New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had asked the ex-federal judge to investigate whether he sexually harassed subordinates, rejecting the wishes of prominent Democrats who believed State Attorney General Letitia James should lead the probe.

Cuomo late Saturday had named former U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones, a former law partner of one of the governor’s closest advisers, to review his conduct after Charlotte Bennett became the second former Cuomo aide in a week to allege she was sexually harassed by the governor.

The Biden White House weighed in on Sunday, calling for an independent review.

“There should be an independent review looking in to these allegations, and that’s certainly something he supports and we believe should move forward as quickly as possible,” Press Secretary Jen Psaki told CNN’s State of the Union.

Prominent Democrats, including state Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, had urged Cuomo to follow the state’s tradition and refer the probe to James.

Cuomo, facing dual scandals over COVID-19 nursing home deaths and the sexual harassment allegations, urged New Yorkers to be patient for Judge Jones’ review to be finished.

“I ask all New Yorkers to await the findings of the review so that they know the facts before making any judgements,” Cuomo said. “I will have no further comment until the review has concluded.”
