(Will Justice) Amid financial hardships due to coronavirus lockdowns across the globe, in the US, women have reported some landlords are demanding sex in place of rent money when tenants aren’t able to pay their monthly rent. But sex for rent isn’t new.

On March 11th, 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic in response to rising numbers of COVID-19 cases across the globe. The declaration meant sweeping global changes, of which, an inability to earn an income due to job loss or business hardship ensured some renters would not be able to pay their housing costs.
Landlords Ask Renters to Exchange Sex for Rent, During Coronavirus
As reported by NPR:
More than 30 million people have applied for unemployment as of April 30, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Many are falling behind on their rent and are being evicted, despite new rules designed to stop evictions. Experts say the moratoriums by state and local officials don’t go far enough and are leaving tenants vulnerable.
My main concern is that I’ll be evicted,” says David Perez. The self-employed father of one sells artisanal wares, like wallets and sandals, at a flea market in Elkridge, Md. “What’s going to happen to my family?”
The above account is not uncommon.
Millions of people are suffering, unable to earn money to pay living expenses.
Some landlords, lacking a moral compass one might argue, have seen the financial hardship as an opportunity to force renters in their buildings to offer sex in place of rent.
The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) conducted a survey, pulling from over 100 fair housing groups, reporting a 13% rise in sexual harassment during the coronavirus pandemic.
From Thomas Reuters Foundation:
“If I did not have sex with him, he was going to put me out,” one woman facing eviction by her property manager told the NFHA in an podcast on their website. “As a single mum, I had no choice. I didn’t want to lose my housing.”
Sex Used As Money, Not New
It should be noted that sex-for-rent is not exclusive to the coronavirus pandemic.
In September 2019, the Irish Examiner reported a woman was solicited by her landlord to pay rent with sex.

Is the Lockdown Necessary?
This is clearly a tragic development.
Many wonder if lockdown and resulting financial hardship is truly necessary given the fact coronavirus death tolls have been declining for weeks, according to the CDC.
The latest numbers for this week, initially show (on the 26th) only 128 deaths due to COVID-19 for the week of May 23rd. This number went up to 155 (on the 27th) but at this rate it’s still a sharp decline from the previous week of the 16th of May, in which the CDC listed 2,482 deaths due to COVID-19.
Here’s the chart.
If there’s no real basis for lockdowns that make it difficult for people to earn a living to pay rent, is there another agenda at work?
This is the question burning in the minds of many.
All may not be what it seems.

May 27th 2020: The initial version of this article mistakenly listed the number of CDC recorded deaths for the week of the 23rd of May at 128. In fact, this number accrues each day, and as such, the article text was altered to better represent the data posted on the CDC website.
