Former U.S. Army Colonel Douglas MacGregor believes the war in Ukraine has reached its “final phase.” MacGregor stated that tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops are surrounded in trenches dug around the Donbas region. Without food, ammunition or a means to retreat, he expects these pockets to collapse over the next few weeks.
Colonel Douglas MacGregor served in the U.S. Army from 1976 through 2004. He fought in the Gulf War, where his unit wiped out 73 Iraqi vehicles within the span of a half hour, all while taking zero casualties. He later published Breaking The Phalanx, which called for radical reforms in the U.S. military. MacGregor’s colleagues believed that his willingness to speak bluntly prevented him from moving up the chain.
Colonel MacGregor recently joined Chris Ball of One America News to discuss the current situation in Ukraine. “The alleged sitting Commander in Chief president is blaming all of our problems in this country on Vladimir Putin. Is he right or his he wrong?” Ball asked.
MacGregor stated that what is happening in Ukraine has very little impact on Americans beyond “making things worse than they already were”, which he believes the public is aware of. “The notion that Putin is somehow the author of our problems is a-lot of nonsense,” Colonel MacGregor stated.
He went on to say that the administration is hinging its rhetoric on irresponsible accusations of a genocide being carried out by the Russian army. “These are unsubstantiated allegations, there’s no real basis in fact. No one is checking [Biden’s] facts, no one in the media is looking at facts, they’re looking at hyperbole,” MacGregor continued. “They’re trying to whip up, mobilize anti-Russian sentiment. It’s a pleasant distraction from the standpoint of the media and the politicians from the disaster here at home, but not much more.”
Ball went on to mention an increase in accusations from Ukrainian President Zelensky, as well as NATO countries, that Russia would use nuclear weapons. The OAN host then asked the Colonel if cavalier accusations of genocide and the use of nuclear weapons could lead to a military conflict between NATO and Russia.
MacGregor pushed back on the “nonsensical” notion that Russia would deploy nuclear weapons. Only the use of nuclear weapons by NATO or a large invading army on Russian borders would prompt the Kremlin to use nukes, MacGregor asserted. He further pointed out that the fallout would likely affect Russia proper, as well as its allies, due to the prevailing winds in Europe blowing from East to West.
The Colonel also believes that the war is in its “final phase” and that remaining Ukrainian troops will be mopped up within weeks. “It’s only going to get worse because we’re in the final phase of this war,” MacGregor said of the war in Ukraine.
The Colonel said this about the situation on the ground:
“Right now there are between 40 and 60 thousand Ukrainian troops left in Eastern Ukraine. They’re in an area of about 150-200 square miles. They’re immobilized, they’re entrenched in defensive positions. They have no fuel, they have only enough ammunition to sustain themselves for a few more weeks.
They don’t have enough water, they have no medical evacuation capability, and they have a-lot of civilians, who are actually Russians, living in the area. They’re now surrounded. And the Russian army is going to move very carefully to avoid civilian casualties there, but they will annihilate these Ukranian troops.”
Colonel MacGregor also shared his “fear” that Ukraine falling could push the Biden Administration to war in order to save face.
“My fear is that when it becomes abundantly clear that all of these discussions about the ‘collapsing Russian army’ and the ‘great victorious Ukrainians’ fall apart, that then people really will say well we’ve got to do something,” MacGregor said on the situation in Ukraine. “Or we in Washington who’ve made all these ridiculous claims will look ridiculous yet again. That worries me, and I think it’s a valid one.”
