() Rep. Liz Cheney, who is underwater in her home state of Wyoming to a Republican primary opponent backed by Donald Trump, has launched a new broadside against the former president.

On Sunday, Cheney said that his challenge of the 2020 election results in several battleground states posed the greatest danger to American-style democratic processes in the history of the country — presumably even more than the Civil War, which saw the nation divided and warring against itself.
“Only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. Today, that role is ours as we face a threat we have never faced before — a former president attempting to unravel our constitutional republic,” Cheney, the top Republican on the House Jan. 6 committee, claimed.

Cheney gave her biggest warning about Trump while accepting the 2022 Profile In Courage Award from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. In her address, she quoted former presidents from Kennedy to Ronald Reagan heralding the nation’s history of peaceful transfers of power after elections.
She said that the bid by Trump and his supporters to challenge the election was an unprecedented threat that needs to be snuffed out without prejudice.
“This sacred obligation to defend the peaceful transfer of power has been honored by every American president except one,” Cheney said.
“At this moment, we must all summon the courage to stand against that. The question for every one of us is: In this time of testing, will we do our duty? Will we defend our Constitution? Will we stand for truth? Will we put duty to our oath above partisan politics? Or will we look away from danger, ignore the threat, embrace the lies, and enable the liar?” Cheney, who looks set to lose her primary if the polling is accurate, added.
Cheney has helped lead what other Republicans have described as a highly politicized probe into the origins of the Jan. 6 Capitol Building riot, though she personally has blamed the former president for inciting what she and critics have called an “insurrection.”
“The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” Cheney said after the riot.
There have been times, in fact, when her criticism of Trump has been harsher than Democrats.
As such, Trump has elected to support her primary challenger, Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman, who herself has accused Cheney of turning her back on the state.
In backing Hageman last fall, Trump said she “is running against warmonger and disloyal Republican” Cheney.
“Harriet is a fourth-generation daughter of Wyoming, a very successful attorney, and has the support and respect of a truly great U.S. Senator, Wyoming’s own Cynthia Lummis,” Trump continued.
“Harriet Hageman adores the Great State of Wyoming, is strong on Crime and Borders, powerfully supports the Second Amendment, loves our Military and our Vets, and will fight for Election Integrity and Energy Independence (which [President Joe] Biden has already given up),” he added.
“Unlike RINO Liz Cheney, Harriet is all in for America First. Harriet has my Complete and Total Endorsement in replacing the Democrats’ number one provider of sound bites, Liz Cheney. Make America Great Again!” the former president noted.
And just last week, Trump said: “From what people tell me, from what I hear from other congressmen, she’s like a crazed lunatic, she’s worse than anyone else. From what I’ve heard, she’s worse than any Democrat.”
In November, Hageman told Just the News that Cheney appears to be more concerned about U.S. military bases in Virginia and elsewhere than she does about Wyoming’s energy and natural resources, as indicated by Cheney’s decision earlier this year to drop her assignment on the House Natural Resources Committee.
There, she had served since 2017, but now she spends more time with the House Armed Services Committee and being the co-chair of the partisan Jan. 6 Committee, where she joins another Trump critic, retiring Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.
“The fact is that Liz Cheney broke from Wyoming, well, over a year ago,” Hageman said in an interview with the John Solomon Reports podcast. “We believe very strongly in Wyoming in the America first agenda, the Wyoming first agenda, energy independence, and being able to … manage and use our natural resources.
“We do not have a representative on the Natural Resource Committee, because Liz Cheney chose to go on the Armed Services Committee. And while that may benefit Virginia, it doesn’t do a doggone thing for the state of Wyoming,” Hageman noted further.
