The coronavirus pandemic has claimed thousands of lives worldwide, according to officials, leading many governments and authorities to cancel events for safety reasons.
There is evidence to suggest the outbreak is not as bad as some say. However, the reaction of panic and fear in the masses is unquestionably having an effect on the lives of people everywhere.
For example, scalpers are raiding supermarkets and reselling basic necessities at overblown prices.
The coronavirus seems to affect the elderly the most.
However, the panic surrounding the outbreak is causing distress.

The Mayer of New York City just declared a state of emergency.
De Blasio declares state of emergency in New York City
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in America’s largest city Thursday to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Speaking at a press conference at City Hall, de Blasio also announced that he would cut the legal occupancy of New York City’s bars and restaurants in half.
The mayor said he “won’t be surprised” if businesses end up closing, but, “These are the rules we will enforce from now on.”
“I can assure you, none of us wanted to take this action,” de Blasio said. “But it is the point where it’s necessary.”
The mayor told reporters the city had 95 confirmed cases of coronavirus, a rise from 42 from Wednesday that de Blasio called “troubling.”
“The last 24 hours have been very, very sobering,” he said.
De Blasio’s move came after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) banned gatherings of 500 or more across the state to try to blunt the spread of the coronavirus, which de Blasio said could be a “six-month crisis.”
New York state as a whole has 216 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, the lion’s share of which are a short distance away from New York City in New Rochelle, a city in Westchester County.
Virginia also declared a state of emergency.
Virginia declares state of emergency over coronavirus
Virginia has declared a state of emergency over concerns about the coronavirus outbreak.
Gov. Ralph Northam (D) announced the state of emergency on Thursday as the number of coronavirus cases rose to 17 in Virginia.
“Our top priority is to make sure Virginians stay safe and healthy, and that our response to this situation leaves no one behind,” the governor said in a statement.
“From our health department, to our schools, to our hospitals, to our transit systems, Virginia’s agencies and institutions have been thoroughly planning for every scenario. This emergency declaration will ensure we can continue to prepare for and appropriately respond to Virginians’ needs during this time,” he said.
The state is canceling conferences and out-of-state travel by public employees. Northam said Virginia is creating tests for the virus and told public schools to make their own decisions on whether to close.
Loudoun County Public Schools was the first school district to announce that classes would be canceled through next week, the district’s superintendent Eric Williams said.
“While Loudoun County has not experienced the extent of presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 as some other areas within our nation or globally and has not had cases that meet the definition of community transmission, we are making this decision out of an abundance of caution,” Williams said, according to a recent statement.
The county confirmed one case of the coronavirus, although officials from the district said there is not a known connection to the school system.
Northam’s announcement comes one day after Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) announced a state of emergency for the city, allowing the mayor to implement quarantines and cancellation of events and gatherings.
The Smithsonian Institution announced public events and tours in the city are canceled through May 3, but its museums and the National Zoo are currently remaining open, according to a statement.
Members of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority board were informed Thursday that rail ridership fell by 100,000 trips Wednesday, as companies began encouraging remote work from places of business, The Washington Post reported.
Metro officials said Thursday they will maintain full subway and bus service for as long as possible but are preparing for a decrease in service if too many employees call in sick or work away from offices, according to the report.
Data from Johns Hopkins University reported 10 confirmed cases in Washington as well as 12 confirmed cases in Maryland. No deaths have been recorded in the affected area.

The NHL will suspend the 2019-2020 season in response to the coronavirus outbreak, following similar decisions by the NBA and MLS.
“We will continue to monitor all the appropriate medical advice, and we will encourage our players and other members of the NHL community to take all reasonable precautions—including by self-quarantine, where appropriate,” Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.
“Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup. Until then, we thank NHL fans for your patience and hope you stay healthy,” he added.
The league previously failed to award the Stanley Cup in the 1918-1919 season due to the Spanish flu, one of only two occasions where the cup was not awarded, with the other, in the 2004-2005 season, due to a yearlong lockout.
The announcement comes the day after the NBA suspended its season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus. Gobert’s teammate Donovan Mitchell has since also tested positive.

Boris Johnson postpones local UK elections.
Boris Johnson postpones local elections until 2021
Boris Johnson has suspended the local government and mayoral elections for 12 months following guidance from the Electoral Commission.
The Prime Minister has confirmed that the polls will now not take place until May 2021, amid fears that they would have coincided with the peak of the coronavirus outbreak.
The London mayoral election will also be delayed for a year.
It comes after the Electoral Commission wrote to the Government on Thursday advising that it postpone the elections.
The watchdog said that there were “growing risks to the delivery of the polls” and that “significant numbers” of people may not be able to cast their ballots.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson is due to take part in an extraordinary summit of G7 leaders on Monday to discuss a global response to the pandemic.
And here’s a list compiled by Time magazine about coronavirus cancelations.
ith an estimated 90,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 around the world, the coronavirus outbreak has impacted nearly every industry globally in recent weeks. Now, with the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, there’s an increased effort to prevent the spread of the virus, which has meant the cancellation of many events, including sporting games, concerts, festivals, and movies.
While some of the cultural events, like the annual Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, have been rescheduled for later dates or postponed until further notice, others, like March Madness, the much-anticipated NCAA tournament, have been canceled entirely because of health concerns.
Read on for a list of everything that’s been canceled or postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic below.
