(Martin Walsh) The Biden administration has admitted that they were aware of the looming baby formula shortage back in February — months before the crisis hit the mainstream media.
by Martin Walsh, June 6th, 2022
During an interview on CNN, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese claimed the administration is working around the clock to tackle the issue, saying the administration is trying to give retailers “more flexibility on the types of formulas that they can sell.”
Interestingly enough, Deese was unable to even provide an estimate of how long the administration anticipates the shortage will last.
Host Kaitlan Collins then asked Deese for his response to Republican criticism that the administration didn’t act fast enough.
“The administration has been on this from the get-go. A lot of this emanated from a plant in Michigan that was producing formula that didn’t meet safety standards,” Deese said.
Collins then asked when the administration first became aware of the shortage.
“As a parent, and with friends and colleagues, we were aware that people were starting to have trouble in stores, but we were aware of this from when the FDA had to take its action back in February, with Abbott and with the steps in the Michigan facility. And we have had a team on this from the FDA and in the interagency process since then,” Deese said.
Collins noted how several complaints were made to the FDA in the preceding months.
“So I’m wondering if the sense inside the White House is that the FDA moved quickly enough on this issue?” Collins asked.
“Well, those are independent scientific judgments that I will leave to the FDA. What I can tell you is that they took action to put in place that recall, and we have been working closely on this issue, in the wake of that recall, to try to address the impending impacts of that.”
WATCH:
This crisis has been so badly handled by the Biden administration that even the mainstream media is sounding the alarm.
“Baby formula is getting even harder to come by at retailers across the U.S., amid a nationwide shortage of one of the most important products for new parents,” CBS News reported.
“At retailers across the U.S., 40% of the top-selling baby formula products were out of stock as of the week ending April 24, a new analysis from Datasembly, which tracked baby formula stock at more than 11,000 stores, shows. National out-of-stock levels jumped nine percentage points, from 31% to 40% between April 3 and April 24. That’s up sharply from 11% in November,” the report added. “The supply of baby formula was already so constrained that retailers have been limiting the number of products consumers are allowed to purchase in order to preserve their inventories.”
“This is a shocking number that you don’t see for other categories,” Ben Reich, CEO of Datasembly told CBS MoneyWatch.
“Prices of baby formula, which three-quarters of babies in the U.S. receive within their first six months, have also spiked. The average cost of the most popular baby formula products is up as much as 18% over the last 12 months,” the report added.
Many on social media slammed Biden over the reports:

Hey, Joe Biden — you can’t take credit for reopening the Michigan baby formula plant when you shut it down in the first place.

It’s an indictment of Biden’s failure to act sooner.

But wait, it gets worse.
President Joe Biden met with baby formula manufacturers last week and said it will be “a couple more months” until supply is “back to normal.”
“We still have work to do,” Biden said, but “we’re making critical progress today.”
Biden said he wasn’t notified about concerns until April, while company executives said they knew in February that closing the Abbott Nutrition facility in Michigan would lead to major supply issues.
“They knew, but I didn’t,” Biden told reporters.
