Hundreds of thousands remain without power in the region as officials and residents continue to inspect the damage inflicted by the storm, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane overnight Wednesday.

Newly-released before and after satellite images are capturing the extent of the damage Laura has inflicted on in the Louisiana city of Lake Charles. The images show numerous structures were flattened at the Lake Charles Regional Airport, with debris strewn across the property. Other images show damage to a neighborhood and homes near a local high school.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is vowing that his state’s “strength will show through, as it always does” following the destruction left by Laura. He wrote in a tweet this morning that “the last couple of days have been hard, and the road to recovery won’t be easy. “But we will recover,” he insisted.

Tropical Depression Laura is weakening as it moves through the Mid-Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley and into the Ohio Valley on Friday. On Saturday, what’s left of the system will move into the Mid-Atlantic. Heavy rain, strong winds and the risk of isolated severe storms will continue along its path until it exits the East Coast on Sunday.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are waking up without power Friday in Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas following Laura’s passage through the area.  PowerOutage.us, a website that tracks the disruptions across the nation, estimates there are currently around 520,000 without power in Louisiana, nearly 200,000 in Texas and nearly 50,000 in Arkansas.
Laura may have been downgraded to a Tropical Depression, but the threat of flooding still looms Friday as forecasters expect the storm to drench parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky.  The National Hurricane Center says some portions of those states could see rainfall totals of up to 5 inches.   “This rainfall will continue to cause isolated flash and urban flooding, small streams and creeks to overflow their banks, and minor to moderate river flooding,” it said in an early morning advisory.  The storm, as of 5 a.m. ET, was centered around 95 miles west-northwest of Memphis, Tenn.

Laura was about 30 miles northeast of Little Rock, Ark. at 11 p.m. ET Thursday and is expected to continue northeastward through the mid-Mississippi Valley on Friday, the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday, and over the western Atlantic on Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
