HISTORY: The First Legal Slave Owner in America Was a Black Man

The first legal slave owner in America was black and he owned white slaves.

Anthony Johnson (AD 1600 – 1670) was an Angolan who achieved freedom in the early 17th century Colony of Virginia.

Johnson was captured in his native Angola by an enemy tribe and sold to Arab (Muslim) slave traders. He was eventually sold as an indentured servant to a merchant working for the Virginia Company.

Sometime after 1635, Antonio and Mary gained their freedom from indenture. Antonio changed his name to Anthony Johnson.

In 1651 Anthony Johnson owned 250 acres, and the services of four white and one black indentured servants. The black indentured servant John Casor (Casar, Cazarao and Corsala) demanded that Johnson release him after his seven years of indenture.

In March of 1654, according to Delmarva Settlers, Anthony’s servant, a man named John Casar requested that Johnson release him from his indenture because it had long expired past the usual seven years. Johnson replied that he knew of no indenture and that Casar was to be his servant for life. Anthony Johnson’s neighbors, George and Robert Parker, stated that they knew of another indenture for the said Casar to a planter on the other side of the bay. They continued to threaten Johnson with the loss of the servant’s cattle if he were to deny him his freedom. Johnson, with the influence from his family, released the servant, and even went to see that John Casar received his freedom dues. Freedom dues are materials and supplies given to the freed person in order for them to start their new lives with the necessary materials. In the case of John Casar, clothing and corn.[110] But after careful reflection, Johnson was certain that Casar was his servant for life; a slave. Johnson then sued the Parker brothers for unlawfully taking his property from him, and since there were no other indentures for John Casar, he was returned to the Johnsons.

The courts ruled in favor of Anthony Johnson and declared John Casor his property in 1655. Casor became the first person of African descent in Britain’s Thirteen Colonies to be declared as a slave for life as the result of Johnson’s civil suit.

Book Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich

In the case of Johnson v. Parker, the court of Northampton County upheld Johnson’s right to hold Casor as a slave, saying in its ruling of 8 March 1655:

“This daye Anthony Johnson negro made his complaint to the court against mr. Robert Parker and declared that hee deteyneth his servant John Casor negro under the pretence that said negro was a free man. The court seriously consideringe and maturely weighing the premisses, doe fynde that the saide Mr. Robert Parker most unjustly keepeth the said Negro from Anthony Johnson his master … It is therefore the Judgement of the Court and ordered That the said John Casor Negro forthwith returne unto the service of the said master Anthony Johnson, And that Mr. Robert Parker make payment of all charges in the suit.”

In a 1916 article, John H. Russell wrote, “Indeed no earlier record, to our knowledge, has been found of judicial support given to slavery in Virginia except as a punishment for a crime.”

It’s not clear if Anthony Johnson also kept his white indentured servants as slaves.

Paul Joseph Watson has more on slavery in Western culture – the truth not the folklore.

Stillness in the Storm Editor: Why did we post this?

The news is important to all people because it is where we come to know new things about the world, which leads to the development of more life goals that lead to life wisdom. The news also serves as a social connection tool, as we tend to relate to those who know about and believe the things we do. With the power of an open truth-seeking mind in hand, the individual can grow wise and the collective can prosper.

What is our mission? Why do we post what we do?

Our mission here is to curate (share) articles and information that we feel is important for the evolution of consciousness. Most of that information is written or produced by other people and organizations, which means it does not represent our views or opinions as managing staff of Stillness in the Storm. Some of the content is written by one of our writers and is clearly marked accordingly. Just because we share a CNN story that speaks badly about the President doesn’t mean we’re promoting anti-POTUS views. We’re reporting on the fact as it was reported, and that this event is important for us to know so we can better contend with the challenges of gaining freedom and prosperity. Similarly, just because we share a pro/anti-[insert issue or topic] content, such as a pro-second amendment piece or an anti-military video doesn’t mean we endorse what is said. Again, information is shared on this site for the purpose of evolving consciousness. In our opinion, consciousness evolves through the process of accumulating knowledge of the truth and contemplating that knowledge to distill wisdom and improve life by discovering and incorporating holistic values. Thus, sharing information from many different sources, with many different perspectives is the best way to maximize evolution. What’s more, the mastery of mind and discernment doesn’t occur in a vacuum, it is much like the immune system, it needs regular exposure to new things to stay healthy and strong. Ask yourself, what exactly is the point of this article?
Do you know who the first person who told me these fact was?
    A Nation of Islam member.
And then they will tell you about how the slaves were sold into slavery by other Africans.
And then they will tell you some other stuff…

I’ll give you 3 guesses at what they said next, as the first 2 will likely lean along the lines of “why” you decided to repost this article to begin with.

    DISCERNMENT

Do you know why “white” people don’t know these facts at ALL and nearly every Nation of Islam member does?
Probably because African history is not taught at all in schools.

Now back to the DISCERNING point.

    Who is the “enemy”?
White people? Black people? Jewish People?
    or
those in power vs. the “masses”??

    DISCERNMENT

So I ask again, why exactly did YOU re-post this article?
I can make a pretty good guess as to why it was written…
What did you hope to accomplish?
What do you think your average reader will take away from this?

    DISCERNMENT

Time to move beyond ALL of this and focus on the REAL goal.
Do you KNOW what it is?
    or
D0 you THINK you know what it is?

    DISCERNMENT

(you are the editor of this blog. You don’t “waive” universal karmic responsibilities by putting a disclaimer under each article. If you want to teach discernment, one most be DISCERNING. Otherwise, anyone can go to Google, the library, the bookstore, etc and “discern” whatever “news”, “opinions” etc they like and this blog serves no real purpose at all, without your “choices” involved,)

I reposted the article because there is a group of radical revisionist that want to rewrite history to suit their ideological agenda. History is important. All of it.

What issue do you have with this article, precisely?

What also should be mentioned is the Jewish slave trade in America, the fact they owned all the slave ships and were responsible for 99% of it but blame whites through the media to rile up black vs white tensions.

It’s to show that even black Americans has servants, it’s clear people like you hate the truth because the truth exposes lies Africans tribes would attack other tribes and take in slaves from these tribes they defeated then would sale them to Muslim countries then later to European countries then to the Americas. Fools want to believe that the United States was the first slave owners but they was actually one of the last but the first to give freedom to black Americans. Fools also don’t like to hear that the first American slave owner was a black American Anthony Johnson he had one black and 4 white slaves. I’m thankful that most Americans have moved past this abomination but there are fools who want to use it to bash America but I don’t understand if they hate America then leave it’s that simple just leave but their not going to because they know America is the greatest Nation besides Israel

Rosario vomits the diatribe of communism.
It’s as though she cannot abide the FACT that a Black Angolan held slaves consisting of Four White People and One Black Man.
Her false claim that ALL muslims know this story is pure idiocy. Having lived in a muslim nation I know beyond doubt that her claim is CLEARLY false.

Thanks for the fun fact. I try to only use facts when DISCERNING the truth, especially when the TRUTH needs the scope of history to prove or disprove any particular argument. As Martin Luther said, “Peace when possible, but truth at all costs.”

I am a Hispanic woman, and I will not believe a Black man was a slave owner in 1600, No way. The only slave owners I ever knew and learned about is the Jews. They were the biggest slave owner in History. I say this because I know. Then they always cry about the Holocaust when Hitler had them when they are the most ruthless human being in life in History.

Look up William Ellison. Not only a black man who owned slaves, but also a black men that bred slaves and sold off the females.

You can choose to deny real history, but in the end, you will only extend your ignorance that leads you to post about feelings and not facts.

      Good luck with that.

You sound pretty racist to me Mildred! LOL!! But yea, blacks owned slaves in the 1600’s, more did after. And are you aware of where the slaves came from? People are saying the whites actually enslaved blacks. There were a few rogue whites who did sail to Africa and kidnapped blacks, but they were hunted down and that stopped. All the slaves brought to America were ALREADY SLAVES by the African kings and tribes. This is how Africans have lived for thousands of years. I believe they invented slavery. They had the slaves in cages along the beaches, and were sold to whoever can to buy. White people never enslaved anyone, the blacks did it all. In fact they sold more slaves to the middle east, and they castrated many of the males to make sure they didn’t preproduce, which is why there are few Africans in the Middle East.

I have to wonder why anyone would say I am this race and that’s why I will not believe bla bla bla. History is to learn from and grow not divide. Media controls all those who live off what they want to hear and not edited bull from 90% of media! Media all you have to do is not edit the truth to your narrative and the World would be better. Back to Slavery -History proves that the top 15 largest slave owners where all Democrats who owned thousands and Abe Lincoln a Republican died as President after abolishing slavery. History teachers in schools do not teach truth but racism and I am talking from experience at major college and if you don’t agree you fail period, now to me that is Slavery no matter who you are!

This is a man who had slaves before the racial aspects of American slavery were really in action. If you read about him on Wikipedia, you understand the context and the history and understand how the racial undertones of slave trade were already developing.

This is a biased article with an intent of skewing facts.

I have a book I bought a long time ago at the National Civil War Museum and it is titled, “”Black Slave Owners.” A Negro employee there sold it to me and it is a compendium of records by Larry Kroger proven by 34 pages of documented names of slaves and their Negro owners from 1790 to 1860 in South Carolina alone plus 40 pages of documented referential notes including bills of sale, state historical magazines, Journal of Negro History, Census records by the dozen, Tax returns, Departments of Archives and History, Records of Wills, Mortgage documents, etc etc etc

Negro slaveowners were a huge number and it was a common practice. This book provides perfectly documented evidence of this crime and this is not to mention the warring and rival Negro tribes who captured other tribal members and sold them to the Dutch slavers.

BLM, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and other leftist loons of Caucasian race need to explain just how they will track down and determine how they will track the descendants of these Negro slavers down as well as the Caucasian slaves owned by these Negro slavers.

Yes, you are right John, he was not the first, but being 2nd or 3rd is not much of a difference. But what really matters is the fact that white people never enslaved any Africans. All the slaves that came from Africa were enslaved and sold as slaves by black slave traders. In fact more slaves were sold to the middle east than America, and they castrated many of the males to stop them from reproducing. The black tribal kings have been enslaving blacks of other tribes they conquered for thousands of years. So I have to roll my eyes and shake my head at all the ignorance that blacks claim white people were responsible for their slavery. It was a crime that we had slaves back then, and the purpose of history is to teach us so we dont repeat it, but no one alive today owes anyone anything. In fact if you look at all the successful and wealthy blacks in America, its a joke to claim they are repressed. As William Montague, a black man running for Congress in Florida has said: “You are not oppressed, you are lazy”. What the blacks in this country need to do is get their families back together, and get their kids back in school and get a good education like the whites, Asians and Hispanics do to be become successful. In the 8 years Obama was president, the school system in the inner cities only got worse.. That’s where the blacks need the most help, and as “reparation’s” go, that’s where we should help them.

      YAAAY !!! YIPPEEE !!!
The FACT that he owned slaves and even RE-ENSLAVED John Casor AFTER Casor was Free is now a Totally Righteous Act because Johnson was not the FIRST to own slaves.

INDENTURED SERVITUDE IS NOT THE SAME AS SLAVERY. IT DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME LEGAL DEFINITION OR PRACTICE. I know that this may make you feel more comfortable with the US concept and practice of slavery but the truth is not the same in practice or in legal definition. To equate slavery with indentured servitude is disingenuous and simply ignorant.
