(John Vibes) Days after the catastrophic Hurricane Dorian left a path of destruction in the Bahamas, many residents of the islands have been left with nothing. There were few structures left standing on many of the islands after the slow-moving hurricane hovered over the region with record-setting winds, and much of the coastal areas were submerged in water.

Sadly, not everyone was able to evacuate the islands, and many animals were also left behind to fend for themselves. One of the unspoken tragedies that happen during natural disasters is the loss of defenseless animals.
However, in the capital city of Nassau, an animal shelter owner named Chella Phillips, was making rescue missions for dogs during the storm. By the time the Hurricane was over, Phillips had rescued nearly 100 dogs.

On Sunday, Phillip’s posted photos of the dogs in her house on Facebook. She said that there were 97 dogs in her house, and 79 of them were in her master bedroom. Her house may have been destroyed, because so many scared dogs could not help but go to the bathroom all over the place, but she was happy to have them safe from the storm.
Phillip’s just wishes that she could have done more, and she worries about the animals that were on the other islands which saw even worse flooding. She explained that many of the animals that she rescued, and many of those who live on the islands, are homeless and abandoned.
“Each island has [an] abundance of homeless dogs, my heart is so broken for the ones without a place to hide a CAT 5 monster,” she said.

She also said that all of the dogs got along extremely well.
“For all the ones asking.. yes.. everyone here gets along and welcome the newcomers with tail wags cause they know they are their brothers and sisters in suffering on the streets..They are not like the selfish humans that mistreated and abused them or simply passed them by and let them to die on the streets,” she said.
In a later post after the storm passed, Phillips posted an update saying that the dogs were safe, but the animal refuge was badly flooded and that all of the power, water, and electrical services were down.
A fundraiser page which initially hoped to raise $20k has now earned over $242,525 in donations.
