Decoding works of fiction is often in a very polarized fashion, in that many claim there is only one meaning, and deny all others. But this is not an accurate assessment of how meanings are generated, nor does it acknowledge the consciousness expanding process of analyzing works of fiction for one’s self to decode them for meanings. Even so called ‘wrong’ meanings have something to teach us, as they reveal what we have within ourselves, allowing us to go within and expand.
We discussed meaning and subjective experience deeply in the post Decoding Fiction – Science of Meaning | As Above So Below (Fractal) Symbolism in Once Upon A Time TV Series.
The below article offers an interpretation of the Wizard of Oz with a highly positive and personally empowering meaning. Of course this does not discount other interpretations; just one point of view.
Meanings are subjective based on our knowledge base and how we place the objects in the work into a field of context. Imagine a group of people watching a basketball game, each person has a different perspective, and no one person’s point of view is more right than the other. Meanings and allegory in this sense are the same, each interpretation can offer a perspective that can teach us something. The notion that there is only one meaning of value is a highly dualistic belief system, but as one continues on their path of truth seeking, they usually discover that there are many meanings locked within any given work or experience, and each one has a place in what IS.
