Tesla Founder Elon Musk Calls for Ramping Up Oil, Gas Production

(Jon Dougherty) Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla, a preeminent electric vehicle manufacturer, is calling on the Biden administration to ramp up domestic oil production following Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, to help the country wean itself from Moscow’s supply.

“Hate to say it, but we need to increase oil & gas output immediately,” Musk tweeted on Friday. “Extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures.”

“Obviously, this would negatively affect Tesla, but sustainable energy solutions simply cannot react instantaneously to make up for Russian oil & gas exports,” Musk, who also founded SpaceX and the Starlink satellite-based Internet service, added.

Musk’s call to boost domestic oil production comes amid dramatic price spikes due in part to President Joe Biden’s reversal of former President Donald Trump’s domestic-focused energy production policies and increased reliance on volatile foreign sources including Russian oil.

Musk made headlines earlier this week for responding to a request from a Ukrainian government official to supply Starlink services to Ukraine as Russian troops invaded and cut off other forms of Internet access.

A few days later, he issued a warning to Ukrainians about using the systems.

“Important warning: Starlink is the only non-Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine, so probability of being targeted is high,” he said in a tweet. “Please use with caution.”

“Turn on Starlink only when needed and place antenna away as far away from people as possible,” he noted further, adding: “Place light camouflage over antenna to avoid visual detection,” he said.

This week, gas prices topped more than $5 per gallon in some states including California.

“Gas prices in California broke record highs in the state averaging $5.07 per gallon, while cities like Syracuse, New York, are experiencing the highest prices in 10 years, and Michigan is seeing the price rise 39 cents in just one week,” The Daily Wire noted.

“A report by Triple-A ranked the states with the highest gas prices currently. As usual, California was at the top of that list, with the highest reported cost at $5.07 per gallon,” ABC 30 reported.

Republicans have pressed Biden to bolster domestic production as well.  “Gas prices are soaring with no signs of slowing down thanks to Democrats’ failed policies,” Congressional Leadership Fund Press Secretary Cally Perkins said in an email.

Perkins blamed Democrats like Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee.

“Every time Michiganders head to the gas pump they’re reminded that Kildee and Democrats did everything they could to restrict American energy, and now working families are paying the price,” she added.

As prices soar, 25 GOP governors issued a letter Friday demanding that the president alleviate the effect of price spikes long term by making the U.S. energy independent through the re-opening of federal lands for oil supply.
