(Saraa Carter) A Norwin, Pennsylvania School Board voted 5-4 to end a requirement for homeroom teachers to put on CNN10 in their homeroom classes for students to watch. The requirement to have on CNN was described as “compact on-demand news broadcasts ideal for explanation seekers on the go or in the classroom.”

After the School Board’s vote, teachers will have the freedom to “use their discretion on whether to keep TVs turned off, show the newscast, or show patriotic videos on events such as Veterans Day or the attack on Pearl Harbor” reported Trib Live.
The school district added CNN 10 as “required viewing material” in 2019. One mom, Ashley Egan disapproves of the school showing the channel, saying broadcasting its affiliated programs is “feeding [her son] every day that CNN is a label you can trust.”
Egan added it “is not unbiased” for the program to be recommending students “visit our friends on CNN.com.” Advocates for the programming, however, say the content is a learning tool. Kristen Ummer, an eighth grade social studies teacher said it was supportive of the school district’s mission statement of civic engagement.
Pennsylvania has been one of the most discussed states in national media due to conflicts between parents and school boards.

Stillness in the Storm Editor: Why did we post this?
The news is important to all people because it is where we come to know new things about the world, which leads to the development of more life goals that lead to life wisdom. The news also serves as a social connection tool, as we tend to relate to those who know about and believe the things we do. With the power of an open truth-seeking mind in hand, the individual can grow wise and the collective can prosper.
