() A top Democrat let the ‘cat out of the bag’ and admitted that former President Donald Trump could be called to testify before Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s partisan select committee on January 6th.
by , July 5th, 2021
Democratic Majority Whip James Clyburn appeared on CNN with Dana Bash on Sunday and revealed that this indeed could be a part of the plan. Watch:
“So, the new chair of the January 6 select committee, Bennie Thompson, didn’t rule out calling former President Trump to testify. Do you think that a full investigation requires hearing from him?” Bash asked.
“Bennie Thompson is well-experienced at the state and local levels before coming to Congress. He’s headed the Homeland Security Committee for a long, long time. And Bennie has been calling for a look into domestic terrorism for a long, long time,” Clyburn responded. “A lot of people may have missed that.”
“But in his job as chair and ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee, Bennie has been seeing things for some time now and been calling people’s attention to it. Sol, I think he knows that we know what happened, we know where it happened. What we don’t know is why it happened and who made it happen.” Clyburn said; “And he intends to get to those last two questions, and do so in a bipartisan way,” he continued.
“What do you think? Do you think former President Trump should testify?” Bash asked.
“Oh, if it comes to that, they should go wherever the facts lead,” Clyburn replied. “They may be able to get what they want and need without him testifying.” He added; “I would not want to see a former president testifying in such a situation as this. But if that’s what it takes in order to get to the bottom of this, because this is more than any one person. This is this country.”
On Thursday, Liz Cheney became the lone Republican to sit on Pelosi’s partisan, non-independent January 6th committee.
“Former President Donald Trump’s top GOP nemesis Liz Cheney will serve on a committee created by House Democrats to investigate the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol,” the Washington Examiner reported.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, announced the makeup of the panel a day after the House voted mostly along party lines to create the special committee,” the report noted.
Speaker Pelosi’s proposal allows her to appoint 13 members to form a committee that would report on the “facts, circumstances, and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex,” including “facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies in the National Capital Region and other instrumentalities of government, as well as the influencing factors that fomented such an attack on American representative democracy while engaged in a constitutional process.”
The select committee will be open-ended and last as long as Speaker Pelosi desires. The January 6 committee will have subpoena power and can order dispositions without House minority input.
