This week, a judge sentenced 49-year-old Anna Morgan-Lloyd to three years of probation, $500 in restitution, and 40 hours of community service. Under the terms of her probation, the woman is also banned from owning a firearm.
Court documents show that Morgan-Lloyd, who was present at the Capitol, did not partake in the violence and was only within the building for an estimated 10 minutes. The plea agreement helped her to avoid a potential six-month sentence in prison.
“I’m ashamed that it became a savage display of violence that day,” Morgan-Lloyd said in court, reports the IndyStar. “I would’ve never been there if I had a clue it was going to turn out that way, because it was never my intent to be a part of anything that is so disgraceful to the American people.”
Morgan-Lloyd was reportedly given a list of race consciousness-related books by her public defender, H. Heather Shaner, to make amends for her participation in the events on Jan. 6. These books, documentaries, and movies including “Schlinder’s List.” She produced a book report on “Just Mercy,” a biography on Bryan Stevenson that revolves around his career representing disadvantaged minority clients and establishing the Equal Justice Initiative in 1989.
“I’ve learned that even though we live in a wonderful country things still need to improve,” Morgan-Lloyd wrote. “People of all colors should feel as safe as I do to walk down the street.”
Addressing IndyStar, Shaner said that her client was “very willing to learn about American history.”
“When I offered her a book list, and the movie list, she got a library card because she lives in a remote part of Indiana,” said Shaner. According to the paper, she told them that “though the themes of the movies and books may not directly relate to what fueled the riot — an attempt to overturn the U.S. presidential election results — she believes they stand as an important lesson in civic duty.”
Morgan-Lloyd was also instructed to read “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” on the oppression of Native Indians, and watch the shows “Mudbound,” “Slavery by Another Name,” and “Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre.”
According to the paper, the apparent awakening of her racial consciousness was vital in the agreement for her probation with the court.
The Department of Justice has since charged some 500 people in connection with the US Capitol breach and has shown all intentions to throw the book at them even though most of them have been charged with misdemeanors like trespassing. The move to crack down on those present at the breach contrasts with continued efforts by state attorneys offices’ dropping of charges against looters and those who destroyed businesses during the Black Lives Matter riots last summer.
