At least one company is reportedly turning up Texas consumers’ digital “smart thermometers” remotely during the state’s ongoing heat spike in an effort to conserve energy.
The company that installed their thermostat allegedly informed them that it had raised their house’s temperature remotely during an “energy saving event.”
The company, EnergyHub, stipulates on its website that consumers who enter a $5,000 promotional sweepstakes must allow the company to “control his or her thermostat to reduce demand during a specified event period.”
However, it’s unclear whether just those who entered the sweepstakes or all customers were subject to the thermostat changes.

This is called demand response (DR) in the industry, and EVERYONE enrolled must have taken positive affirmative action to be enrolled in that utility’s DR program. If they were not, they should contact the state PUC immediately and raise hell. In Texas there are a lot of retail energy companies. If any of them are doing unethical things like enrolling people in DR without their consent, then that company will be heavily penalized. That would be because false enrollment netted the retail energy company an undue savings in costs with reductions in total peak power purchased. DR is a good program that enables utilities to be able to utilize greater proportions of unstable green power, (wind, solar), because DR adjusts load as green power varies. It’s a quite elegant solution to the evolving modern power network. But as with any industry there can be dishonest people finding ways to cheat, and we need to find them and root it out.
