“The effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom has submitted enough verified signatures to qualify for a recall election, according to an update from the California Secretary of State’s office,” ABC reported. “The latest update says 1,626,042 signatures have been submitted and verified. To qualify, they needed 1.495 million signatures.”
“Counties still have until April 29 to submit the rest of the verified signatures and that will then be followed by a 30-day period where people can withdraw their signatures,” the report continued. “Former State Senator Don Perata has launched an effort — called ‘Stop the Steal’ — to encourage people to remove their names from the petition.”
“However, even Newsom’s team believes it is unlikely the effort will ultimately be successful in blocking the recall,” the report added.
Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, San Diego businessman and former gubernatorial candidate John Cox, and celebrity activist Caitlyn Jenner are all interested in challenging Newsom for the job of California Governor.
The petition “Rescue California” gathered over 1.5 million signatures, enough to qualify to put his recall up for a vote; but there has been some uncertainty due to the State of California’s effort to throw out as many signatures as possible.
After once being considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, Gavin Newsom has experienced a fall from grace, even among rank-and-file Democratic voters. The left-leaning website FiveThirtyEight captures the reasons for his falling support, while pointing out that this would be the sixth time the state would see a recall election:
Timing and increased discontent with Newsom’s leadership — both, coincidentally, byproducts of the COVID-19 pandemic. After earning rave reviews early in the pandemic, Newsom is now under heavy fire, even from allies, for his handling of the coronavirus. He went back and forth over the legislature’s proposed vaccination rules and has struggled to convince teachers and administrators to reopen schools. California has also changed its vaccine distribution plan several times since vaccines became available, catching some providers unprepared, and currently ranks 39th among the 50 states in terms of percentage of doses administered. And his policy on lockdowns has pleased no one: Conservatives have accused him of strangling the economy with restrictions on businesses, while public-health experts have criticized his decision last month to lift regional stay-at-home orders as premature. […]
Governor Newsom’s heavy-handed lockdowns and personal hypocrisy during the pandemic fueled public outrage. The recall election would be an early litmus test for politicians who misled the public during the lockdowns and mask mandates ahead of the 2022 election.
