The Ways of Tongkat
Found in Asian countries such as Malaysia, Burma, and Thailand, Tongkat ali was traditionally employed for the treatment of malaria, high blood pressure, fevers, fatigue, loss of sexual desire, and impotence. With it’s recent rise in popularity, modern science is feverishly finding evidence of what natives have long held to be true about this plant medicine.
It was believed by the locals that Tongkat Ali was a symbol of power for primal men, correlating to masculinity and virility. Often, Tongkat was combined with coffee which you can still find being served in cafes across Malaysia.
The way we now have access to Tongkat is mainly due in part to Dr. Johari Saad, who is called by many the King Of Tongkat Ali. He first extracted the root and discovered a plethora of beneficial compounds, namely glycoproteins which appear to be the libido-enhancing ingredients in the plant.
Aside from glycoproteins, Tongkat possesses potent protective plant compounds which promote longevity while other phytochemicals like quassinoids in the root prove twice as potent as aspirin against fevers.
Nature’s Hormone Optimizer
The claim to fame with Tongkat is its brilliance in creating more free testosterone within the body.[1] Not only can Tongkat increase testosterone, but the research is overwhelming in showing how taking Tongkat stimulates sexual arousal and may restore erectile function to healthy levels.[2] [3] [4] [5]
Dr. Saad, the King of Tongkat, says, “It basically came down to four categories, increased testosterone, increased energy, inhibition of SHBG, and increased muscle mass.” He also explained then when given Tongkat ali extract, animals copulate three to four times more frequently than normal.
These animal studies carry over into human research with Tongkat, proving the testosterone benefits to be well known and well documented.
While testosterone plays a huge role in libido, other secondary sex characteristics include the appearance of facial hair, enlargement of the larynx (producing a deeper voice), sexual desire and sexual behavior. In women, this vital hormone also fans the flames of ardor, and promotes sensitivity in the erogenous zones.
For both sexes, testosterone stimulates metabolism, promotes lipogenesis (burning of fat), and supports muscle mass & growth.
Maximize your Growth!
While testosterone is the holy grail in terms of muscle gain from resistance training in the gym, the benefits from Tongkat do not end there.
Like what Dr. Saad talked about, there is also energy to be gained from Tongkat, especially before a workout. We’ve talked about the ATP process at length in our Forskolin article as well.
Basically, Tongkat is another great way to increase our most basic capacity to create energy on a cellular level, known as ATP. An increase in ATP promotes overall energy and vitality without hyperstimulation, jittery nerves, or insomnia.
This is all in thanks to compounds including eurycomaoside, eurycolactone, and eurycomanone, which may help your body use energy more efficiently, help fight fatigue, and endurance.[6]
In a study of men, half of the subjects ingested Tongkat ali extract and half did not. In an eight week physical training program, the men who consumed Tongkat ali experienced greater gains in muscle mass and strength than those who did not.[7]
Asian athletes and body builders have already begun using Tongkat to maximize their gains in the gym, something we can learn from to increase our performance.
With all of these benefits and more to come as new studies are published, we at Stillness in the Storm have partnered with Ascent Nutrition. You can find Tonkat Ali in their Peak Vitality product, which can be seen here.
