7 Gates of Initiation – Illuminating the Body, Mind and Soul

One thing we can count on for sure is through our spiritual journey we will have  hard work ahead of us in order to illuminate our lives and free ourselves from the bonds of our limited humanity.  It is apparent in many spiritual texts that the one who goes on this journey goes through a spiritual initiation of some sorts.

Much like Jacobs ladder there is a process of awakening and going through 7 Gates, 7 Chakras or the breaking of 7 Seals in order to illuminate the mind into it’s highest form of consciousness.

According to the following statement by Manly P Hall in his monthly letter to his followers dated: April 1937 there is more then one myth that has the symbolism of (7):

According to Hermes, the orbits of the seven planets (known to the ancients) formed a ladder connecting heaven with earth, and conversely, earth with heaven. This was the sacred Ladder of Seven Rings, the Ladder of Jacob, and also the Ladder Golden Cords by which Mohammed ascended to the footstool of God in the celebrated Night Journey. The planets are also the Seven Seals of Revelation which must be opened, the Seven Gates of the Mithraic Mysteries. They are the Seven Trumpets and the Seven Vials, and the Seven Churches which are in Asia. The powers which emanate from them .are the Seven Cardinal Virtues, and the perversions of these powers are the Seven Deadly Sins. They are the Seven Sacraments, the Seven Elohim of the Jews, the Seven Great Gods of the Egyptians, the Cabiri of Samothrace, Ildabaoth. 

In Hermes Pymander it is described that upon their thrones the Seven Governors administer the whirlwind of cosmic power…

The bible describes Jacobs dream as the following:

A dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” – Genesis 28:12-15

So let’s take a look at the Metaphysical meaning behind this dream and remember when we take the words in spiritual texts literally we lose the greater meaning of them. There is almost always a hidden meaning behind the words. We just have to open our hearts and minds to look for the hidden meanings.

The Stairway or Ladder is a symbol of the step by step process one goes through when they start to awaken to the truth, the Angels are the symbols of purity and as they ascend and descend back and forth from the earth and heaven. It is their pureness of thought and light heart that allows them to go back and forth.

Let’s take a look at the following statement from the scripture above:

“I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.”

  • The “I AM” is about the highest place of consciousness.
  • The word “LORD” is one who is filled with spirit and has dominion over the physical realm
  • The word “GOD” is about the Omnipresence mind
Light Heartedness

When I think about the statement of purity with the angels I get pulled to the Egyptian Mystery of the The Judgement of Osiris.
According to the Egyptian Book of the Dead the soul would be lead before Osiris while they were reciting the “42 Negatives”  –  Starting with the prayer:  “I have not learnt the things which are not”
The meaning of this prayer was to say that the soul did not weigh themselves down with trivial matters in life but that they spent their life working on things of importance. 
The point of the ceremony was to show the souls level of purity and then the moment of truth happened when the souls heart was weighed against the feather of Ma’at; should the heart prove lighter then the feather then the soul was immediately brought into the afterlife if it was heavier then the feather, it was immediately devoured by the God Amenti and the soul no longer existed after that. 
So lets stop for a minute and think about our own lives and think about when we are heavy hearted or when our mind is bogged down with stress, worry, anger or anxiety. Let’s think about all of the people on psychotropic drugs today in order to manage their stress. How much turmoil are we in when all of these emotions are dominating our lives? and if we really think about it.. is this life?

So the feather is about our weighted hearts or a light heartedness .. Amenti is about the loss of our life and pulled into the abyss of nothingness that many of us get pulled into in life. 

We as people in modern and ancient times get our mind and heart bogged down in matters we have no control over. We over extend ourselves working on things that really do not matter in order to please others. Never realizing that the temple of God is within us and also missing the fact that when this temple is clean and orderly then we have a blissful happy life and then we are light hearted.
This is why it is said in: Matthew 18:3
And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Think about a child and how innocent they are, how loving they are towards everyone, how carefree they are in life. They love unconditionally and do not look at others and judge them. They are not burden with right or wrong but with pure love, curiosity and joy.  
We as adults get out of balance and fall deep into FEAR instead of LOVE…

The serenity prayer is a powerful way to lift your heart and body of all of these burdens and when you not only recite but also bring these words into your life you can free yourself… (It however takes practice)

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,Courage to change the things I can,And wisdom to know the difference.

Think about that prayer for a moment and as you recite it think of all the things you are trying to control in your life and all the things you have no control over. Let those things go and allow the flow of the universe to take care of those things. Work on the things you can change in the “NOW” of the moment!

In addition the Heart is the center of the 7 Chakras and is the center or sometimes referred to as the Governor of the other 6…

When the chakras are opened they will illuminate the body allowing it to go into it’s purest state and be of a light heart and pure mind.  Each chakras has a lesson and something we need to detach ourselves from in order to fully open that chakra and keep it open.  Very much like the 7 gates that Inanna travels through, when she does her descent into the underworld. Inanna has to remove 1 thing and give it to the gate keeper at each gate. Each time she does she sheds a piece of herself that was holding her back and each time she frees herself a little bit more.

The pieces she sheds allows her to “LET GO” of what she felt was important about her self image and allows her self to love all aspects of who she is and in turn becomes more in alignment with the Greatness of who she is both Dark and Light.

As we shed away parts of ourselves we then let go of the burdens that so often bog down our growth both spiritually and physically.

From a Lecture I listened to by Manly P Hall titled: The Vision Of Hermes

He speaks about how we illuminate in stages and I am pretty such some of you will be able to relate to these stages in some level.

1. Opinion to Sense
2. Sense to knowledge 
3. Knowledge to wisdom
4. Wisdom to Understanding
5. Understanding to Intuition
6. Intuition to Illumination 
7. Illumination to God 

If you really ponder these levels he speaks of from going from one level to the next you realize that you have probably gone through some of these stages in your own development each time you let go of a part of you that was holding you back and keeping you from your progression as a soul.

There is a lot to think about and ponder! and Remember we are practicing down here!
