6 Reasons Why Writing Is Good for Your Mental Health

Tuesday, October 6, 2020 By Stillness in the Storm Leave a Comment

Spread the love

(Daniela McVicker) If you want to act responsibly, you have to take great care of yourself. If you’re not feeling good, you won’t be able to help other people, be a good partner, or friend. This is why it’s important that you take care of your mental health and make it one of your top priorities.

Different people use different methods to preserve their mental health. Creative writing is one of the options you could try out. If you’re not sure how creative writing is good for your mental health, just keep reading. Here’s a list of 6 convincing reasons.

Let’s take a closer look.

1.     Clear Your Mind

When you’re stressed out or anxious, you’re usually not able to concentrate on anything else. Still, when you try to deal with all the negativity, you only sink deeper into it.

This is because it’s very hard to take control of your emotions and think straight in moments like that.

Luckily, creative writing can help you clear your mind.

All you have to do is:

  • start writing
  • explore your emotions
  • rethink earlier events
  • sort your thoughts

Just start writing and don’t look back. Write about the first thing that comes to your mind and let go. Don’t think too much or analyze your words.

This way, you’ll clear your head and be able to calm down. As a result, you’ll feel less confused and chaotic.

2.     Processing Instead of Suppressing

Most of us like to act strong and not let the “little things” bother us. Still, it’s impossible to control what bothers you and how much.

This is why every time you’re trying to stay strong and not let things get to you, you’re actually:

  • suppressing emotions
  • pilling up on negativity
  • building stress

Creative writing will help you deal with your problems, define them, and process them. It will teach you how to redesign your thoughts.

This will help you work through your problems instead of trying to hide them. Processing your emotions is healthy and one of the preconditions for strong mental health.

3.     Reduce Stress

Sometimes, we just need something to blow off some steam. Different things work for different people, but creative writing might just be the perfect thing for you.

Here’s the deal:

  • you’re stressed out
  • you need someone to listen to you
  • you don’t want anyone to judge you or feel sorry for you

Just write it down and pour your soul out.

You can write about anything that’s bothering you and simply get it out of your system. Afterward, you’ll feel lighter and relieved.

Using creative writing as a stress relief can be extremely beneficial for your mental health.

4.     Practice Consistency

Creating healthy habits is important. It plays an important role in your mental health and you should work on being responsible.

Creative writing provides an opportunity for you to show you’re ready to work on yourself.

You need to make a promise to yourself:

  • you’ll show up every day
  • you’ll write every day, even if it’s just a couple of sentences
  • you’ll stay determined

Active work on yourself will give you the positive motivation that you need. You’ll show self-support and belief that you can make the changes that you need.

You can even share your experience with creative writing with others, in a blog post or on social media. Check out these thesis sites in case you need some help to polish your writing.

This will keep you positive and uplifted.

5.     Show Self-Love

Self-love is yet another thing that you have to practice and actively show yourself. You need to give yourself the love, support, and help that you’d like others to give you.

So, start with yourself and be more kind and loving to yourself every day.

Use creative writing to:

  • write positive affirmations
  • write your goals and wishes
  • encourage yourself
  • motivate yourself
  • be your own inspiration
  • daydream

Do whatever makes you happy and show yourself the love you deserve.

Use creative writing as a safe space and don’t hold back on being positive towards yourself. This should be your platform and your moment to find some positivity in every day.

6.     Understand Yourself Better

When you’re struggling with mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, it would be rather helpful to recognize what causes you to experience this.

However, it’s very hard to understand what’s happening inside our minds and what leads to mental health problems.

Still, creative writing can work wonders when it comes to understanding yourself better, and here’s why:

  • you keep track of your day-to-day feelings
  • you run a sort of a diary
  • you’re keeping a record of your mental health episodes

To put it simply, you can read back what you’ve written over a certain period. That will teach you a thing or two about yourself:

  • what triggers your negative emotions
  • have you done any progress over time
  • what hurts you the most
  • what makes you feel better

If you understand yourself better, you’ll be able to work on yourself and make some progress. This will help you deal with your mental health problems.

Final Thoughts

Your mental health is something you should work on. You need to invest the energy and time in giving yourself the support and helping yourself overcome any issues you’re facing.

The list above will help you understand how you can benefit from creative writing. Use it as inspiration, and start writing to improve your mental health.

Stillness in the Storm Editor: Why did we post this?

The news is important to all people because it is where we come to know new things about the world, which leads to the development of more life goals that lead to life wisdom. The news also serves as a social connection tool, as we tend to relate to those who know about and believe the things we do. With the power of an open truth-seeking mind in hand, the individual can grow wise and the collective can prosper.

What is our mission? Why do we post what we do?

Our mission here is to curate (share) articles and information that we feel is important for the evolution of consciousness. Most of that information is written or produced by other people and organizations, which means it does not represent our views or opinions as managing staff of Stillness in the Storm. Some of the content is written by one of our writers and is clearly marked accordingly. Just because we share a CNN story that speaks badly about the President doesn’t mean we’re promoting anti-POTUS views. We’re reporting on the fact as it was reported, and that this event is important for us to know so we can better contend with the challenges of gaining freedom and prosperity. Similarly, just because we share a pro/anti-[insert issue or topic] content, such as a pro-second amendment piece or an anti-military video doesn’t mean we endorse what is said. Again, information is shared on this site for the purpose of evolving consciousness. In our opinion, consciousness evolves through the process of accumulating knowledge of the truth and contemplating that knowledge to distill wisdom and improve life by discovering and incorporating holistic values. Thus, sharing information from many different sources, with many different perspectives is the best way to maximize evolution. What’s more, the mastery of mind and discernment doesn’t occur in a vacuum, it is much like the immune system, it needs regular exposure to new things to stay healthy and strong. If you have any questions as to our mission or methods please reach out to us at [email protected].
