Ex-FBI Principal Deputy General Counsel Trisha Anderson testified Tuesday in the Michael Sussmann trial that she doesn’t recall knowing that the defendant represented a client when he pushed information to the bureau in 2016 alleging Trump-Russia collusion.
The testimony is critical to the case against Sussmann, a 2016 Clinton campaign lawyer, who was charged by Special Counsel John Durham last year with lying to the FBI.
While a partner in the Perkins Coie law firm Sussmann allegedly told then-FBI General Counsel James Baker that he was not working on behalf of any client while providing him with since-debunked allegations of a secret Trump Organization communications channel to Moscow via Russia’s Alfa Bank.
However, Durham has marshaled evidence in support of the government’s allegation that Sussmann was working at the time on behalf of two clients, the Clinton campaign and then-Neustar tech firm executive Rodney Joffe.
Anderson was a deputy who worked under Baker when Sussmann provided the data for the Alfa Bank allegation in September 2016, weeks before Election Day.
During initial questioning by the prosecution, Anderson testified that prior to the Alfa Bank allegation she had interacted with Sussmann regarding litigation against the FBI that he was part of on behalf of a client.
Sussmann has pled not guilty to the charge. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.
